Hi following on from my post yesterday (brake discs and pads) i've jacked the car up and taken the wheels off to find that the pads have got a good 7 millimeters left on them and the discs are smooth and not pitted but do have a slight lip on them. once i tried the car again it seemed fine and the initial rubbing/grinding had ceased. next time i drove the car the noise is back. it's not effecting the breaking distances or ability to stop and the brake fluid is at the correct level. it started at the time we had all the snow, don't know if that has any relevance on it?
anyway would br very grateful for any advice/ideas.
many thanks in advance.

At this time of year it's not unusual to get grit trapped between the brake heat shield and disc. You can also do a brake test to make sure you don't have a sticky piston or seized slide pins. Drive the car for 5-10 miles and coast to a stop. Touch the discs. They should still be cold to touch. Hot discs are a good indication of a underlying problem. A brake and caliper dismantle is required. Grease piston bore with Lockheed red grease and lubricate slider pins too. Double-check the rubber dust sleeves for tears/rips, etc. You can buy a brake kit (rubber 'o' ring for caliper bore, dust sleeves, etc from main dealer). If piston bore has some slight surface rust, rub with wire wool and WD40. Use Copper-ease on the backs of pads. Bleed brakes, topping up reservoir with DOT4 fluid and retest.
I've noticed similar increased noise since the winter weather arrived. I put it down to more aggressive surface rusting due to salt. The brakes are fine after a hill descent (very hilly round here). Even the rear pads stick and then break off if parked on the handbrake for more than a day. Nothing to worry about IMO as long as they still FEEL OK.

Mine have been making a right racket in the morning and the discs are genuine. They are showing sins of surface pitting, I think it is salt like Ike says.

I had a noise coming from the off side wheel only. Sounded like a grinding with every wheel revolution. The noise stopped when I applied the brakes, but, upon releasing the brakes, it reappeared. Found out it was the lip of rust on the edge of the disc. Must have been just touching the pads. So i just tapped it off with a hammer and it just crumbled off (wear a dust mask). Did the same with the near side, just incase. Not had noise from them in 6 months now. Hope this helps.
