:aargh4: :p Hi, I am an ex-audi coupe owner. Reluctantly, had to change cars when i had kids as the child seats wouldn't fit in the coupe - shame. now am driving a saab but am looking to buy an a4 avant tdi. the one i've been looking at has the tdi badge in all silver, and the tdi on the engine block is in all white. :confused: however, the current owner insists it is a 110 bhp and not a 90. the vehicle is a 99 t reg and he asserts that it is the last of the old engines, the red i now relates to 115s and that this is in fact 110. Can anyone help me clarify this please? what is the relevance of engine number in identifying the bhp? i did read a posting along these lines but it seemed to relate to vws.... i would be grateful for any advice and look forward to again being an audi driver....:D

hello and welcome, being a new member ill answer ;) but try a search in future, they're very handy ;)

forget the badges, the red or the silver I's they're useless.....

look in the spare wheel well in the boot, there should be a sticker with a 3 digit code there.

there is also the inside of the service book

and if you take alook under the bonnet, on the timing belt cover, the 3 digit engine code is there too, the engine codes relate to the BHP as follows :

ATD --74 kilowatt --100 bhp
AJM -- 85 kw --115 bhp
ASZ -- 96 kw --130 bhp
ARL -- 110 kw --150 bhp

At least two cambelt changes with the most recent hopefully being a few thousand miles ago.

thanks for all the advice re determining bhp of a4 avant 1.9 tdi.

over the phone the seller assured me it was 110 bhp so I went 53 miles, with the kids, to view the car. thanks to the advice i'd been provided on this forum, i quickly established that it was in fact 90 bhp.

everything else seemed good about the car but I'd read that the 90 bhp are sluggish and it just wasn't what i went to buy so I didn't have it.

the seller wasn't prepared to drop from the already discussed £2800. the car is a t reg 1999 a4 avant tdi 90 bhp with full audi service history, 178k miles, overall good condition. I believe it may still be worth £2800 but i didn't buy it as it wasn't what i thought I was going to view or buy.

Any thoughts...?? are the 90 bhp noticeably sluggish on the m'way? I'm looking for a good 1.9 tdi 110 bhp with fsh1998 onward. Is a £3000 budget realistic?
