Hi
Advise needed :1zhelp:
I keep tinking about getting rid of the my 53 reg A6 1.9TDI avant for a S4 or S6 avant in a simalar year, just love V8's but what will i get in MPG on the V8 or the 3.0 TDI.
or should i go for a 3.0 tdi avant will 233 bhp and spend a bit more money.
what is a 2003- 2004, S4 or S6 manual Avant with about 70 K on it worth ?
or a 2005 3.0 TDI manual worth
My A6 's is only done 66 k and I love it, its the rare limited edition version not the more common final edition it looks great in the grey too.
hi mate if you can afford to run a v8 then go for it . but if you live in the real world like me you are already in the most sensible car fuel prices are going through the roof as we speak and believe me i have run 2 audi a6.s with the 2.8 quattro drive and once the novelty wares off you get sick of putting fuel in at the moment i am running an a4 avant 1.9tdi sport i had it remapped from 130 bhp to 165bhp by angel tuning and this as improved the mpg and makes the car a lot better to drive . have you thought about this on your a6 . if the fuel prices keep rising like they are now these 1.9tdi.s will be like gold dust to get hold of and the big guzzlers wont be going anywhere unless you have very deep pockets

Would agree with that. The novelty wears thin when you're constantly pulling into a garage to fill up. All depends on your annual mileage.
bigsteve1635 Do a quick calculation on your current annual fuel consumption on the A6 1.9TDi and a worst-case scenario fuel consumption on an S4 or S6. Remember they're different beasts altogether, so fuel consumption will be the least of your worries, as you're now talking twin-turbos, uprated brakes, oil-changes every 10k using fully synthetic oil such as Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge. The S4 takes over 6 litres in the sump! Also throw into the mix, a near the top insurance group.
Space-wise, you'll notice a big difference with the A6 if moving to an S4 Avant. I've got a B5 A4 2.5TDi quattro avant, but I have to use a Thule roofbox for family holidays as the boot space isn't huge. Also rear seat passengers may find it cramped.
At the end of the day, if you can afford it, then do it.

Under the old scheme, any Audi with an S or an RS in it's model is a group 20 car - so it will be a sizeable hike in insurance premiums...
Cheers,
Dan.

Ouch. Thanks for that Dan. Interestingly a 2003 S6 produces 343g CO2, which puts it in the top band for road tax too (Band M). That will cost £435 a year. Bank and Rob are two words that come to mind! :D

I feel your pain. I've had my eye on an S4 Avant for a while, but no matter how much I do the "sod it you've got the money what are you waiting for" maths, I stick with the 1.9 130 Sport Avant instead. I just cannot face getting 300 to a tank as it's only burned going round the M25 to Surrey and Heathrow - and the last time I looked the Nazi Cameras were all round there.....so I just can't see the point...I don't pay for my fuel directly (company gives me a fuel card) but I still end up paying 40% of a large number (£3200 last year on diesel alone!) so I reckon I'd end up paying 40% of 5k to do the same miles.....
Never mind the tax as you mention, and the fact the insurance goes up from £320/year fully comp to £1500 to boot....
Yeah it would be fun for a bit, but my god the wallet-injury just doesn't seem worth it.
Cheers,
Dan.
exactly mate stick with what you.ve got and if you want more power spend £200 on a remap . £155 road tax a year as opposed to £435 high forties + mpg as opposed to what 18 to 20 round town . insurance group 13 instead of 20+ and the self satisfaction that if you want to drive an audi you are already in one of the cheapest to run HAPPY DAYS

if you're interested in a S4 a VW specialist that I've used a few times has a 2003 S4 Avant available at the moment. www.volkswizard.co.uk
I'm seriously tempted but a limited budget and around 20k miles per year mean that I'll be sticking with my diesel passat for now.
I'd echo what others have said, the S models are seriously expensive to run. you can expect about 20mpg and insurance will be silly prices.
on the positive side pre-23rd March 2006 cars attract a maximum road tax of £245 so there's a small saving which could swing it with the other half :-)
