golf 3 automtaic trouble

hi guys i have 1993 vw golf 3 1.6 automatic with 87,000km on the clock. im having trouble with operation of the gearbox. when driving around town at 50km/h its seems to hold third gear at about 2500rpm and i have to excellerate to 60km/h to get it to shift into higher gear. when i does shift its not smooth and i drops the revs to a more ideal 1800rpm. but now im speeding:confused:. the gearbox has nice clean oil and at the right level. is this normal operation or is there something simple to check.
p.s i live in holland and i dont trust people i dont understand.. thanks for help

Have a look through this forum, there was a recent post about auto boxes and there was a comment about a pipe which can come loose IIRC.

Your gearbox is computer controlled and so you must start with a fault code read.
