Considering they charged me £87.00 for a rear brake bulb and a wiper blade for my old 56 plate, I guess I'm not the only one they fleeced!!

ok i will try and put this into some form of context the thermostate costs about £18 with the rubber o ring, then say £5 a lt of antifreeze say £20 so i would say if all they done was change your thermostate and refulled with fresh antifreeze, they didnt fleece you no, far worse, they pulled your pants down and swung on your wedding present for an hour

yes that was about £180 more than it should have been

That is not necessarily the case as the labour can be and probably is the biggest part of the bill. Now i dont know what engine you have or where the thermostat will be located but on my engine its a big job. The front of the car must come off and cambelt to go with it. In my experience i have gone to the mechanics direct and avoid the service desk to ask advice. They should tell you how many hours it will take for your engine and then you can work out how much it should be for labour. I dont know what the typical hourly rate for an audi dealer is but i bet its close to £80 an hour so you dont get much for your money. You could just try asking thedealers them selves as they should give you a layout of the costs.

Getting a proper breakdown of the costs is the only proper way to work if you got any 'value' from your dealer.

Audi labour rates will be much higher than £80. My local dealer is £110 per hour (+VAT!)
