Further to the problems with my Audi Avant 2.0 170 tdi. Audi diagnosed the possible reason for the loss of coolant could be the egr cooler within the head as there are no other obvious signs. If this is correct and the vehicle was still being used with the header tank just being filled up from time to time, could this cause the turbo to fail with a broken shaft? or is this totally unrelated and merely a coincidence? thanks

The egr cooler is external and can be checked by removing and visual inspection for signs of coolant.
Coolant loss for this engine is usually caused by hairline cracks within the cylinder head casing, you can check this by removing the exhaust manifold and pressure testing the coolant under 1 bar of pressure over a 48 hour period.
After 48 hours visually inspect the exhaust ports for signs of coolant or use an endoscope, if coolant is present around the ports/valves replace the head.
As for the turbo then if coolant is burnt it just burns through the exhaust but suspect poor lubrication and possible worn oil pump balance shaft.
Just some pointers for you

Do you know what the estimated cost should be to replace a new head/labour/etc, not necessarily from a main dealer as I am sure that woud be astronomical? :o

cylinder head is roughly £500 plus gaskets and head bolts so lets say £700 to £800 for parts
labour around 9 hours
Cylinder heads used to be a lot more, around £1000 but have dropped due to the volume of failures no doubt.
Estimate of around £1500 all in would be fair
