View Full Version : Tyre Pressure Monitoring

I have an 08 SE, when I purchased it the dealer told me it has the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, the 2008 brochure states the same.
However looking through the MMI the only mention of tyre pressures is in the setup where you can select the measurement unit ie. bars/psi
According to the manual, when you adjust tyre pressures you have to store them with the MMI, but on my car there is no option to do this.

Does the TPMS require you to have certain tyres ? The dealer fitted four new Nexen tyres.

In your service book on one of the first pages it will list your build spec (or some of the important bits). Have a look if code 7K6 is there as that is the AUDI factory code for TPMS.

It just measures differing rolling radius of wheels using sensors (nothing to do with tyres your replacement tyres).

Has nothing to do with the tyres fitted.

It works similar to the ABS system. A wheel with a deflated tyre has a smaller circumference, and so will have a greater directional velocity, as it's covering a shorter distance in the same time. The computer picks this up, and is therefore able to determine if any of the tyres is underinflated.

If you have it then you will need to reset it for the new tyres. In mine within Car (and possibly setup??) I have a TMPS option. All it does is reset the system. You should use it after you're topped up the air, changed tyres etc.

As said above, the first thing is to check if you have it.

The TPMS option to store the current pressures should be visible in the CAR menu on the MMI. If you don't see it, it may still be possible to enable TPMS on your car using VCDS - I did this for GolferPete. The deciding factor is which ABS module you have fitted to the car - the general pattern seems to be that 1AS is not TPMS-enabled, and 1AT is TPMS enabled. Take a look at the sticker in the spare wheel well (or in your service book) at the option codes and check whether it lists 1AS or 1AT. If it's the latter, a forum member near you with VCDS should be able to get TPMS up and running.

Regards,

MF.

Cheers guys,

It doesn't look like it's fitted, I don't have the 7K6 code, and the code for the ABS module is 1AS.

Yet according to brochure it's a standard item on the SE model. Nevermind..

Are you sure you're reading the brochure correctly?

A dot means it's an option. If it shows S then it's standard.

In the various brochures I have (including this one : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3628815/a4%20200807.pdf ) TPMS is not standard on any A4/S4.

With this Tyre Pressure monitor system, I was under the impression it had special valves in the tyres whch is where the sensors where? So when you change your tyres for new ones you have to replace these? Is this correct? As I shall need two front tyres soon so need to be prepared if I need to aquire these sensors from Audi first as I shall get tyres from local tyre Garage?

The only "proper" TPMS ( not via the ABS) I've seen on VWs is on the big 4 x 4's with the tyre pressures displayed on the dash. The special valve sensors are in the wheels not the tyres. The valve sensors look completely different than the normal tyre / wheel valve. Sensors are about £70 each as spare part.

So, tell me is it possible to let the air out carefully so you can re-use the orignal sensors and not let the tyre guy cut them off with a stanley knife like they normally do and save the £70??? for tyre replacement, surely the valve bit are standard which can be unscrewed and replaced if nessessary?

The valve pressure sensors stay in the wheel. The VW recommendation is that the sensors should be replaced every 6 years. Changing tyres should not disturb the valves.
It would be interesting to learn of any valves damaged / removed by any tyre fitter not aware of the sensors. Other manufacturers use valve pressure sensors that are intended to stay with the wheel so I would expect tyre fitters would only make the mistake once !

All European B8's just use the ABS sensors to detect the change in diameter to indicate a pressure loss.

The wheel pressure sensors were used on American B8's but I believe since MY2010 they've moved to the ABS sensor system.

Ah, tyre pressure monitoring... one of the things I'll miss when I (hopefully) move from my Laguna to an A4 later on today. On the Laguna seperate sensors are used on each tyre and it really made me lazy about checking the pressure at the garage - very accurate.

I may have to look at retrofitting the ABS system as a safeguard.

You may not have to. Sometimes a little change of the codes is all that's required ;)

1AT... well looks like I need to find a friendly VCDS guru. Time to introduce myself on the forums :D

If you're ever heading around the M25 or heading to Essex (M11 ) then give me a shout and I'll do it ;)

Now you've got me wondering if I should have attempted it today on a forum members car.

They had 1AS - 8K0 907 379BB

Yes it seems the info knocking about isn't 100% true as the pr code suggests this was not possible but it worked

Just tried it on my 1AS and it worked !!! Fantastico !!
ABS 8K0907379AQ

Only problem, the battery level in the MMI display has now ghosted.
So I tried [56-Rado] Adaption, Changed the value to 65535, but it enables everything including oil level and background lighting menu (which I don't have) so they appear ghosted instead.

The original code was i think 65005, I added +16 to give me the battery meter, but I can't +1024 for TPMS as the range limit is 65535. Hope that makes sense.

Is there anyway I can have just the battery meter and TPMS in the menu both working without showing oil level and background lighting ?

Not sure how the picture link will help me.

Perhaps you could talk me through the changes in VCDS that I need to make to get this and the battery monitor? This was one of the features I wanted to enable with VCDS but when I tried initially I failed... THis could be a big help to me.

Thanks

Can you confirm if you have mmi 2g,sorry just seen your signature
MMI 2G HIGH

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THIS LINK http://www.audizine.com/wiki/index.php?title=B8_A4#Enabling_of_Tire_Pressure_Mo nitoring_System_.28TPMS.29_on_A4.2FA5_.28B8.29

I do not know the author and I'm not a member of the forum so cant thank him or send him the information showing that in some cases the pr code 1AS will work

Might sound stupid but I couldn't tell the difference between 2G and any other G level. I have the DVD colour navigation and the MMI knob between the seats rather than on the dash under the screen. Does that make sense. I think it has a slightly larger screen than some?

UPDATE - I did a little googling and I am pretty sure that I am MMI 2G High. My ABS unit is 8k0 907 379 S ; ESP8 quattro H04 0210

Fingers crossed.

I'll follow the link and try it - many thanks.

Great work! Now you need to update your signature to reflect your mod(s).

Did you do the needle sweep, alarm chirp etc too?
