Hi,
I have been reading a lot about lumpy idle issue. Until this evening I was not lucky to find a resolution to a problem of this issue.

I owe 2005 Audi A4 2.0 TDI 140 for three months now and uneven lumpy idle has been driving me crazy.

Engine gives uneven lumpy noise when cold and usually when starting driving from stop lights. Noise is present on front driver side of the engine. In higher rotations of the engine the noise disappears. Engine does not record any fault codes on VAG-COM when lumpy idle is present.

Lots of topics mention possible problems like: EGR Valve, MAF Sensor, Timing Belt tensioner and DMF. But, I don’t think these are issues.

Today I visited a mechanic and asked him to remove the alternator belt.

And guess what: the lumpy idle noise disappeared.

Removed belt runs through the A/C unit, belt tensioner, alternator and PowerSteering pump.

I didn’t have any spare parts to test each unit separately, but now I know for sure that noise is not from the engine body itself but is rather from one of the units that is connected to a alternator belt (A/C unit, belt tensioner, alternator and PowerSteering pump)

Whoever has more details to this issue please contribute to this post to we can resolve this problem once and for good.

Thank you in advance.

It could possibly be ac pulley as this has a clutch mechanism in it that gets noisy when worn.
Not sure how to check this though.
Also not sure if altenator has something similar.
PM A8tech, he may be able to advise further.
