:1zhelp:Can anyone help a damsel in distress please? My car is really stressing me out right now and I don't feel safe driving it but I'm reluctant to replace it! I'm really hoping that one of you lovely people may have experienced the problems that I have had here!

My little golf keeps losing mechanical power when I'm driving, this is very scary especially when I'm on the motorway! I'll be cruising along at 60mph and then the revs will drop down to 0. Sometimes it only happens for a second or 2 but then sometimes it will stall completely and I have to pullover and wait for a little while before it starts again.

Recently it has been losing power and/or stalling when going at slower speeds too. It never happens with a cold engine, always when I've been driving for at least 20 mins. It will always cold start but sometimes when I go to the shops it won't start when I try to drive home. It will turn over fine, it just won't start.

I've had the VW garage look at it and they can't find anything wrong. They say the head gasket is fine.

In the last few weeks I have had it serviced and had the following replaced:
-distributor cap
-rotar arm
-fuel filter
-cam belt
-spark plugs
-coil
-oil filter

I really don't know what to try next, if anybody out there has any suggestions, I'll be really really grateful! :D

Most importantly, what engine does the car have?

Seems a bit odd with it dying at speed and at random, sounds like a bad connection or a faulty component, but depending on what engine the car has depends on what it could be.

Hi there, its a Golf CL. I think it's a 1.6. I don't have the reg doc on me at the moment but can find out tomorrow. Thank you for reading this!

CNeed the age too! If you still have a sticker on the top of the cambelt cover it will have the code in there. (AEE would be one possibility.) I also think it's on the white sticker under the carpet in the boot

Having said that I'm with BugsyMalone, it sounds like a faulty component or contact, or something fuel supply related.

Hi guys, sorry for being a right girl about this!

It's a P reg 1996 1.6. I just went and checked on the car!
The code is AEE 289 531.

I replaced the fuel filter but it didn't make any difference. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and post a reply!

I just borrowed my friend's error code scanner and did a scan after it stalled and the code that it came up with is
00529 or P0725 - Engine speed input circuit (RPM Sensor)-Malfunction.
00529 or P0727 - Engine speed input circuit (RPM Sensor)-No signal.

Does anyone know what this means and whether I can fix it myself>?
THANK YOU in advance!!!

Finally we have diagnosed the problem, it was a faulty sensor in the distributor, so we got a second hand distributor fitted and its been running perfectly ever since!
Thank you all for your help and interest!
