View Full Version : Residual heat enabled

I've noticed a few comments from ex-BMW owners saying that they miss the residual heat feature in their A4's. I was aware of a VCDS tweak that enables the fan to run on after ignition off but these posts prompted me to try it out and see if it works with blowing residual heat. It does :biglaugh:

Once enabled on your car, you simply tell it via MMI how long you want the fans to run for. You can set the fan speed and which vents it blows from. So far I've only tried it by running the car for 5 mins on my drive, turning off and seeing if it worked. It blew warm air for a about 3 minutes. I'm sure with a properly warm car it would blow for much longer.

Anyway the details are all here : http://www.audienthusiasts.com/VagCom_AuxVent.html

If you do this and like it, let me know and I'll pass this back to the owner of that site as I speak to him on another forum.

I hope you find this useful.

p.s. Of course this will be quite useful in summer for blowing air through the car to keep it cool after you've parked up. You can even enable different times to freshen up your car ready for you to leave work etc.

Make your way over to Harlow (a nice drive via the A507/Baldock) and I'll do it for you ;)

That is absolutely brilliant! Is there anyone with a VCDS in the Greater Manchester / Cheshire area?
Cheers

If you read the site that I linked to you'll see the restriction seems to be whether you have AC in the bottom corner of the Car page on MMI.

If you do then it should be ok. ;)

Indeed I do, thanks!

Anybody up in West Scotland with VCDS? Needle sweep, dipping reverse mirrors and now auxiliary heating, nice.

Anybody know of anyone in Bristol who has the kit to do all these various "tweaks" that are mentioned on this fantastic forum?

Name your price Scotty to come to Bristol and give my car all the party tricks (thanks for the response by the way)???!!!

hehehe :D

it'd probably be cheaper going to your dealer as it's a 300 mile round trip for me and at the Inland Revenue's standard 40p/mile rate it's gonna be about £120 !

Also bear in mind when you go to the dealers there's always the risk of them resetting it (as they did on mine recently) so it may only be on there on a temporary basic. :(

I'm sure there's gotta be someone close to you. I just looked on what was the two databases of people that have it and help others. One says the data was all lost and try the other. I tried the other and it's just SQL errors :(

Fair enough. I'll probably just buy it myself and then recoup some of the outlay by "tweaking" others vehicles (assuming I do mine without inadvertantly programming it to explode as soon as I press the starter button!!!) :D

Good luck. :biglaugh:

After 10 years and literally hundreds of cars the only things I've ever had are :

[1] a BigMac meal
[2] a four pack of beer
[3] a corporate rucksack

I bought mine as I had a modded TT and wanted to tweak and check it was running ok.

I sold that to some guys at the Nurburgring.

I bought another cable that was Twin K line for my B6 S4 as that was also modded and I wanted to tweak. That actually found an intermittent knock sensor which wouldn't have been discovered for another 15k miles at the service. When running nearly 400bhp I'd rather the knock sensor be working!

I then traded it against my current cable which is CAN and HEX so I can do the latest cars and the older ones.

Yep it's cost a lot but I wouldn't be without it. Perhaps I should charge £25 or so everytime but I never have and don't know any other owner who has either.

Just done this one on my SE and it works !!. It seems you need to have the AC menu in the bottom right of MMI, and maybe the 3 zone climate.

Only problem, it does leave a stored fault code, it doesn't light up on the dash but it is there. Just wondering what the dealer will make of it.

It's your car so you can do what you like to it :D

Unless you have a fault which they have reasonable grounds to say you caused then it won't impact anything.

Oh and when they plug it up on a service you'll probably lose the settings and have to redo it anyway ;)

Cool, I was just a bit concerned as I didn't know where I'd stand with regards the warranty, it's going in next week for fuel flap, battery, gearbox & clutch problems. I planned to take off all the VCDS mods before that but not clear all the fault codes.
I just didn't want to give them the excuse to say I've voided the warranty.

Don't mean to be thick and have read the site linked, but can you get it to 'warm up' your car for you in the morning before your drive to work?

ScottyUK
12-01-2011, 05:44 PM
No.

Residual heat means it blows the heat remaining in the engine bay/circuits into the car. If the car's cold then there's no residual heat to blow.

Some Audi's do have "Aux. Heating" which is a separate heater which burns fuel rather than battery power and when you do this mod you do see the Aux Heating entry into the MMI but without the extra hardware you can't use it.

Edit:
In fact I'm currently sitting in my car and have just run a scan. It shows this omission as :
1 Fault Found:
01207 - Control Module for Auxiliary Heater (J364)
004 - No Signal/Communication
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 01100100
Fault Priority: 6
Fault Frequency: 1
Reset counter: 107
Mileage: 9624 km
Time Indication: 0

^^^

Seen some stuff about Aux Heat in my MMI but didn't think I had the requisite kit. How can you tell if you have the hardware for that?

ScottyUK

You ask your dealer about your Audi Q7 etc and see what he says.

You haven't got it. ;)

p.s. The other way is if it's enabled then they'll be an error as I posted above if you haven't got it. Alternatively try it and see if it gets warm :D
