I have a 06 Golf MKV with the 1.6 engine (FSI) which I have owned a few years now. When fueling up I am just using run of the mill unleaded which seems to work fine however, when talking to a pal yesterday who I believe has the same engine in his Audi he was saying that I should be using premium unleaded and that he was advised only to use regular in emergencies and when he does it ideles terribly.
Can anyone offer any advise on this, should I start using premium immediately or am I okay as is ?

when i owned petrol engined cars i used the higher of the 2 but reg wont harm your car, you may find it runs better and does more to the gallon on the higher fuel, only time would tell, do worry about using reg, give the max a try and see what you think

Waste of time in a small engine petrol car IMO.

I'm very interested in this question myself as well.
A number of posts back in 2005/6 suggested that the 1.6fsi engine MUST run on super unleaded and that this was the advice of VW as well.
However the filler cap of my 2008 1.6fsi states '95RON Super Unleaded' - a bit of a contradiction in terms! Some mechanics that seem to be 'in the know' recommend SUL for fsi engines, yet many others state any 95ron will do.
I've run both and can't tell much difference in performance or mpg. Currently trialling Tesco 99 Momentum.
If it makes no difference, then I'd rather save the cash, as any minor savings in mpg doesn't outweigh the extra cost. But if sul is the way to go, I'll stay with it.
Any more comments?
Thanks.
I usually use Shell's V-Power and sometimes regular as I find it better than supermarkets petrol, gives me a few more miles.

super unleaded!
if you read your handbook it says you can run on normal but with reduced power etc

Hi, I have just bought a 57 reg 1.6 FSI and I had read the same sort of stuff about RON 95/97, so I looked inside the fuel cap cover and it says in big letters 95 RON which is the standard fuel rating but the words say super unleaded. As I said I have just bought it but collect it next week and I intend to use the standard fuel but may use the low sulphur options like Sains** and Tes** have been mentioned in posts elsewhere. I hope I have got this right and wait to be corrected :Blush2: Be gentle with me I'm a newbe here

Nearly all fuels sold nowadays are ultra low sulphur.
After a tank full of vpower then momentum 99, I have seen no difference in mpg or performance (not that you would probably notice performance in a 1.6fsi anyway).
I now have a full tank of shell fuelsave 95ron. That has given me the best mpg in the past so far.
