Purchased a tool similar to "Hub Shark" off of well known auction site, and managed to replace front N/S bearing on my 97 2.8 quattro avant without removing housing......no need for alignment!! Didn't even use an air tool, Just a 6 foot bar on the end of a 3/4 drive ratchet. Took a little bit of patience, and a bit of effort, then came right out! broke off old inner race from hub, all back together within 3 hours.
Thought that some of you might like to kniow that this is possible!
Next job.......replace front flexi joint before cat on N/S.....also going to try welding this on in situ.....

Well done. I personally never thought a hub shark would get those bearings out.
Even messing about with that is probably still quicker than removing the bearing housing, plus no alignment as you say.
Which one did you buy out of interest?

It was only a cheapo set from ebay- not even branded, but phospher bronze coated, and up to the job! won it in auction for £50, buy it now was £85 Just made sure that the main thead for the puller was liberally coated with copper slip.. had a Serious amount of torque on it.....my 2 ft breaker bar was bending, so ended up welding the guts up on an old 1/2 drive ratchet, and using a 6 ft stainless tube for as a lever!! Sorry I didn't reply earlier.....haven't been on here for a while. If you are interested, the e bayer called himself charleycandymountain. It's easily up to the job..Hope this helps.
