Hi,

I have just bought a VCDS to look at a problem have with my Passat FSi.

Although I am not new to diagnostics, I am new to this car and Can bus dignostics.

My engine is failing to hold steady revs at idle and the VCDS reports 9 faults - Pasted below. I am guessing that it is possible for one problem to cause several fault codes to be recorded, so given the information and the faults codes what would you guys think would be the best place to start?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Nigel

If you do a search on my name and check my latest thread on MIL Problems, you might find the solution to a couple of your codes. The valve also makes an uneven idle that is shown from A8

I haven't searched Bangor Lad's posts, but I agree that those problems / faults are common. In the US, several of the root causes are covered under recalls.

I would focus on these 3:

008583 - Bank 1; System too Lean at Idle
P2187 - 004 - No Signal/Communication - MIL ON
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/18619/P2187/008583

Either pull the oil cap at idle and see if vacuum is present inside the crankcase
-or-
With the engine Off, remove the black plastic hose/tube that goes to the breather valve and cap it off directly at the manifold. Make sure you choose a cap that will not get sucked into the engine! This will eliminate the possibility that the faulty valve can cause an internal leak. Start it and see if the idle has improved. You may also find this MB 032 info helpful both before and after clearing faults and bypassing the valve:

P2279 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded

Ok, only today have i had chance to have a look at this problem, thank you for the replies.

Even today I only managed to grab five minutes under the bonnet.

So tried the simplest thing first, with the engine running I removed the oil filler cap and placed my hand over it and could feel a vacuum there. Is that what I should feel or is that a bad thing?

Cheers

Nigel

Im not sure if thats the way it should be or not but mine does the same, did she start to run off cylinders and bad idle when you removed the oil cap ? Mine does this and thats after replacing the PCV although she now idles perfectly so I assume YES is the answer.
