Hi to all. Recently bought a Passat 2.0 tdi dsg 170 sport saloon. Very happy generally with the car after an Audi A6 Avant. To the point: DSG 1st gear pulling away jerkiness, clutch judder in 1st too during take-off, jerkiness in reverse. VW West London had it overnight, reset the gearbox, new oil and filter (which it didnt require). Had the car for a few days now and the problems have mostly gone but the juddering still there but now after pulling away and coming to a halt. VW say no codes have come up on their diagn. computer, so apart from bringing it in again and checking again, they say they can't do much more. Any help would be greatly appreciated as otherwise I think the car is pretty much spot on!! Thanks in advance.

Look on the UK Golf Forum http://uk-mkivs.net/ and do a search for DSG. There's a big thread about DSG problems, started by the Audi TT community. Plenty of diagnostic info if you look deep enough.

As for your specific problem, the DSG is not as silky smooth as the Audi multitronic you probably had on the A6 but there shouldn't be any jerkiness.

I had similar problmes and put up with it for two years, including the sometimes lumpiness on take up in reverse. I reported it at the first service and ended up with a new Mechatronic unit. Make sure you are under warranty, it's about £1500 if paying with your own beer vouchers. If you are out of warranty, scream blue murder, contact VW UK if necesary (Milton Keynes, not the halfwits at the call centre in Leeds) but make sure you don't get stiffed for the full price.

I'm happy to be corrected, but I don't think the Mechatronic unit throws up any specific codes to say "I'm duff". If your dealer is no use, try another. My local agent is as much use as a chocolate kettle so I drive an hour to one who I can trust.

I would say after the software reset give it a while, try thrashing it up a long hill through 2nd, 3rd and 4th a few times seems to clean off the clutch packs 9someone else , but then the next thing they will try is the mechadoodoo unit. This gave the placebo effect for about 5 - 6000 miles.

Next thing - new box and mechadoodoo

Now all good!

What year are we talking mine is a 57 (about jan 08) had the box replaced at 59500, however there is a new aug 2010 issue mechatronic unit, mine was on the list for this, but when they (VW UK) sent the files to germany for diagnosis they basically replied within an hour saying fit this aug 2010 part along with a new box which they were sending over for fit in two weeks.

Since it has been done its a different car.

Dont get me wrong, once you got used to the slow speed jerkies it was fine, always start off with a tiny tap on the gas to release the auto hold, then squeeeeeeeze the pedal, mostly using just the first inch or two of the gas pedal. backing off a bit at gear changes. i wouldnt say mine was knackered i just kept mentioning issues at service and was shocked when they changed the box 500 miles from warranty end!!
