View Full Version : Possible battery issue ??
After a long weekend of being ill and having man flu I went to start my car and all I had was a clicking sound and that was about it, clearly the battery wasnt a happy camper.
Only thing I can remember leaving on was my ipod classic 5th gen.. everything else was normal.
I took it back to the place I bought it several weeks ago (After getting a mechanic friend to help jump start it), I mentioned about it possibly being a dud battery but they said it wasnt the battery as it was new before I bought it. They put it on charge and 2-3 days later it was 100% and everything seemed normal.
I drove the car yesterday to work and all seemed ok, at lunch I was going to go out for a spin and the battery low indicator flashed up on screen briefly.
I'm now worried that its a dud and I'll get stranded somewhere.
I fixed up an old scuffy laptop I had (I use Macs at home and there is no client), an associate had a Virtual machine with an older version of the VCDS software on it 9.08 I think. I borrowed his cable and was able to grab some info out of it.
I'm a VCDS newb but willing to give it a go :)
I've done a scan and its found tons of stuff, much seemed to be related to low voltage..would it be appropriate to post somewhere else on these forums or here? Or should I just speak to the garage type chaps and let them know the findings?
Thanks
A4 Lad

Get the battery tested somewhere else. Find out its voltages when its running and been stood for a while. Check the battery drain level, all these can be done with a simple multimeter.
Regarding VAGCOM, many of your faults will have been triggered by the flat battery so clear them all, drive the car and rescan it again then post up your findings.
ok :)
I'll try to keep it short, I dont think it has had the codes done for a while as there is quite a few older ones in it.
There is a repeating theme which worries me..

According to a test I did (there was some tick boxes to show up to 12 elements, I'm a newb remember) the battery showed 70% which is a worry, I wasnt able to export the data for some reason, I'll grab a screen shot next time.
Any help offered would be appreciated.
14 and a bit volts when engine running, last time I checked the battery was around the 12.4x volt mark idle.
Will try to figure out how to clear the faults and try again, I'll have some time this weekend. Alas I need the car for work so keen for it not to die. got a 40 mile run into work tomorrow hopefully can get a bit fo a charge in it.

Clear all the faults, drive it and start again. Its the only way you'll make any progress with that huge list as the battery problem will have caused many of them.
The battery meter isnt know for being 100% accurate. I'd check the battery drain and if possible have it load tested by a garage who know what they are doing!

If MMI version is an older one, then the radio can stay on and draw power from battery when car is parked, see this service bulletin - http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/3/...b.91-07-13.pdf (http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/3/13/883667/audi.tb.91-07-13.pdf), and update to latest MMI version, which updates radio to fix fault. I had same problem and this fixed it, nothing to do with battery, it was a software fault that was causing the battery to drain.
I'm smiling now, but I wasn't a couple of hours ago, battery was dead as a horrible dead thing.
The wife called the garage as I was on the road, had to use her car, thank god she was off this week for half term.
She called them and was uttering the immortal words "He's not happy, feels let down" etc etc..
The garage are sending somebody to collect the car today. Given the fact the battery was given a pretty healthy charge, I have only done 40 mile plus journey's since then, bar a single instance of turning it around in a car park for the windscreen to be replaced, I can only assume the battery or charging circuit is crapped out.
Alternator "appears" to charge the battery while the engine is running, pushing 14+ volts through it, not had a chance to measure the drain yet though.
I'll report back as an when something happens.
Thanks,
I think I'm running the latest version now, 5570 was updated a couple of weeks ago. I did kind of think my ipod might have caused it too, but its not been connected for over a week now.
If it does prove to be battery then I'll be a bit concerned as I'll have little faith in the garage/dealer I got it from. I note that my car still has not been picked up from my house though!!..

Did they collect it? What's the verdict?
ok, they didnt collect in fact they didnt turn up until 4 this afternoon.
Apprently the blipper didnt work (he blamed interference) but he was able to get in using the key, then everything seemed ok. The remote doesnt seem to work now (either of them, despite both working normally). This problem seemed unrelated to the battery issues I saw several days ago.
I'll try again tomorrow as I'm now at home all weekend.
I'll do a rescan and see whats going on.

Thanks I'll see what I can do, the second error would have been prior to my ownership, thus on an older version of the software update on the MMI if that makes a difference? It has since been updated to 5570.
The battery appears to be a Volkswagon original, 000 915 105 DL, 12V, 110Ah, 520A DIN.
I'm not sure what this means "cp needs releasing for central electrics two and airbag" ?
Battery is now on a slow charge.
I did grab some more data earlier which i've just copied off the Windows VM.

Battery is on charge, I'll check it out tomorrow
Battery now reporting a bit better after heavy charge I reset the DTC's and went for a 30 min spin, and did an auto scan again afterwards. I've put the battery back on slow charge now as the scan revealed it was on 70% condition only.
Some observations:
No matter what I do the remotes will not open the car, I have to put the car in the lock, I presume this does some sort of sync, as soon as I've done that the remote works until the car is locked again.
MMI/Stereo: Doesnt start as soon as the key is put into the ignition, I used to be able to just put the key in then I could see the MMI. As soon as the engine starts MMI comes to life.
These are all new things since I've had this battery "issue", my biggest concern is that after 3 week of owner I'm now left with faith in the car which is disappointing, hopefully we'll get a "fix" that cures all the ills.
Latest scan after the fault were reset erase.

Not being funny a8 tech but whats a LICENSED A8 TECHNICIAN ???
And im not, im interested to know, where do they get their license ?
Been having a bit of a play and went to check the battery a little while ago and did the following.
A8 Tech when you mentioned transportation I recall seeing the menu, but from what I have read it generally only works on low mileage cars, I thought id give it a go to see if it cleared some issues, since they appeared to be power saving type issues.
1. Cleared all faults
2. Put the car into transportation mode
3. Disabled transportation again.
At that point the MMI sprung to life and remotes started working , much joy was had!!!!
Could this have accidentally put on by my garage or during the scanning that I've done?
Only 2 faults showing now.

So, I'll see how the battery comes on with the charging, and then look to fix the battery meter, and trip computers and high speed warning menu items after a a few days of it all working again.
Thanks to all who offered advice.
I've spent a bit of time today going through the adaption stuff and frankly its not that complicated, its simply a case of updating a number of registers, not too different to computer programming only a bit more simple as there is a finite series of combinations.
Thanks to the help I've had I have enabled the two options I previously had and then lost during the MMI updates.
Speed warning and trip computers all sorted and battery meter now active.
Thank you to all that helped.

Because the battery has discharged then its reached a state were the manager has put the systems into safe mode to allow cranking but turn consumers off (transport mode)

The license was granted to master technicians after they then under take a 2 week assessment solely on d3 platform a8, no longer available any more
Other license vehicles are R8 AND RS6 which I also have, now the license qualification has been replaced with vehicle launch (2 to 3 days) and no way near as in depth as the license qualification which required a pre req of master technician which generally meant techs with 10 years plus or in my case 20 years plus brand experience plus qualification

For those that may have been following my recent saga I got my A6 back to the garage who had put it into Audi themselves. Despite me asking numerous times about the battery and them saying it was brand new it turns out that they have not coded it, even though I asked them 2 times.
Today they finally admitted that they didn't have the kit to do it and that Audi couldnt find any other faults.
Time will tell (approx 2-3 weeks normally!!!) so we'll see how it goes..
I've missed my car :(
Also, when I get a chance over the weekend, I'll get a scan done and see if the Battery regulator fault is cleared.
I'm pretty peed off with the garage for wasting my time on this.
As luck (?) would have it I spent all of Saturday in the office with some issues to deal with, car started fine and got me home no problem.
Came to start the car for work this morning and no joy, seemingly dead as a Do Do at least not enough to turn it over.
I may have been heard swearing in Worthing area, if you heard me I apologise!!
Anyway the Wifes Saab started first go and I'm in the office.
Garage has been informed to pick the car up and "Don't fxxxxng bring it back until its properly fixed" Thus far this month I have had 6 days use out of it.
Will update the saga when I have more news.

My car has a battery problem. '55' plate A6 Avant. 2.7 TDi which I bought from Reading Audi - with 81 miles on the clock - in May 2006, so similar to yours Tay.
I have one bar showing on the battery meter on the display and it stays at 1, even on a 250 miles run.
I suspect that having done 90,000 miles and being 6 x years old, it's just the battery is a bit worn out. Are these sealed batteries? Can they be refilled with an acid mix? If not, then it's about £100 for a new battery.
It could be your battery is just tired out Tay?

On the battery meter I had 1 to 2 bars showing after starting in recently but that would gradually creep up to 100% after 45-50 mins of driving.
Mornings are the worst it would seem, last week it wouldnt start I used a new jump starter I had and it cranked over no problems then started, it seemingly was fully charged by the time I got to work (battery meter on 100%) , approx 1 hour away. The same afternoon it started up fine no problem.
I used it on Saturday (2 days after Worthing Audi had it) and it started no problem at all, I thought the problem was beaten..
This morning (it was cold overnight, I saw frost on the roof around 2am) around 8am it didnt have the grunt to turn the engine over, my booster is now either ******* or doesnt have the grunt to turn it over either although it did try.
I have been assured numerous times that the battery was brand new before I bought it, around the beginning of October. Audi suggested that it hadnt been coded (despite my garage telling me it had been).
Alas, I dont know where the issue is but I cant work from home anymore, I cant keep leaving the office early to take the car into the garage and I cant take it not starting again.
After having the car since the 3rd of October I have been unabel to use the car for 13/14 days due to it being in the garage, wouldnt start or simply battery being on charge.
Frankly, I'm fed up now, I'm a very patient man, but, I paid a lot of money for the car, I find that the offside front tyre was put on the rim in reverse or somebody put it on the wrong side, I've had to buy a battery starter and simply dont have any confidence in the car.

The 1 to 2 bars thing, then charging to 100% started on mine in March this year. It then seemed to charge okay and stay at 100% until I came back from 2 x weeks away at the end of August, when it was totally dead.
Britannia Rescue got it going on the drive and it seemed to recover but about 6 x weeks ago, it dropped to 1 bar and has stayed there ever since.
I turn the lights' switch to 'Off' and keep my foot off the brake when starting but it always turns over fine (at the moment) but the car is clever enough to know that until it's run long enough to get a certain charge on the battery, to withhold power from certain circuits. This I suspect anyway, as my Road Angel always takes an age to find satellites when I first start the car, even on a clear day but if I connect my better half's Golf via jump leads, then Road Angel kicks in straight away.
This leaves me to believe that the charging circuit is operational but the battery is so exhausted, that it cannot hold a meaningful charge for any length of time. I drove for 4 x hours continuously one day last week and the meter never climbed above 1 x bar.
Car batteries are only designed for a life-cycle of around 5 x years, hence my suspecting that mine - and yours - have reached the end of their lives.

There's a few stories on one of the USA forums

and here is where I'll likely be ordering my new battery.

I've been reading some stuff on batteries and the general consensus seems to be even a brand new batteries can be screwed up if they are allowed to go flat and stay that way for several days.
Other cases show that short distance driving can be an issue (although for me that isnt an issue).

Just remember that once a new battery is added you'll need to get it coded or do it yourself.
"Apparently" this is to allow the Audi systems to optimize the charging characteristics..

Not sure about the coding thing. I will just 'jump' another battery to the terminals under the bonnet, remove old battery and replace with new one. This should leave power connected at all times and negate the need to reset anything. I'm not aware of the batteries having any form of 'intelligence' that wil talk to the car computers to say what they are, that's possibly a bit above the level of a car PSU and the one I have fitted looks like a bog standard lead-acid type battery.

It's not the battery that needs coding, it's the car which will need to know that it now has a new battery and not a failing old one.
This is for monitoring and control purposes.

Send it a text or simply and politely whisper into its mudflap that you have done so, although depending on exactly how smart these cars really are, you might have to say it in German :-)
On a more serious and less silly way, I would say with VCDS or VAGCOM as its also known
Latest update:
A6 has been in the garage for another 4 days. Audi Worthing have had the car for a couple of them, initially said it was all working ok, but after having observed the car for a couple of days they have determined that the CCU is the problem. This was ordered yesterday and should be delivered/fitted today. I'm led to believe that this device controls all the internal bits and pieces and they seem to think it has been turning stuff on when nobody is there.
Watch this space I guess.

I had all sortes of problems after buying my better half a Audi tt second hand a few years ago. Battery was going flat on a regular basis. I associated it with the winter coming and the car only doing short runs.
Took it to the local Audi dealer for diagnostics because I was convinced the battery was fine and they said faulty battery. Paid for a new Audi battery. Same happened again. Back to Audi and pointed out to them that the off load drain on the battery seemed high having checked it with a multi meter myself. Audi could not find a fault bu agreed the off load drain was a little high, replaced the battery with another new one claiming new batteries can sometimes be faulty. Same happened again!
Being less than impressed with Audi I called a mobile auto electrician a friend of mine recommended. After 2 hours he found a tracker unit burried somewhere deep in the car which I didn't even know was there and diagnosed it was faulty. After the tracker was disconnected no more battery problems :D

Morning all - new to the forum - as I have been trawling the web looking for answers to this problem.
Have an A6 2.0 tdi 57 - 35,000 per year - last 18 months no problems at all great drive.
Since the cold weather started - 6 weeks ago - the battery has been constantly draining - the AA came out and kindly put in a new battery - rated 80ah - Unipart Samson apparently an upgrade. Anyway this didn't resolve the issue and within days the battery had drained. The AA came back and replaced the battery with a new one and did a thorough check and concluded I had a drain......
Independent VW and audi specialists struggled to help so had to book her into Audi Derby for diagnostic check - who after putting the car to sleep (no sure what that means) then discovered that the quote " Fault located to sound package ECU - noted aftermarket hands free kit wired into this unit may be cause" quote to replace £682.35 !!!!
So didn't need a new battery in the first place - now time to take issue with the fitters of the Car Kit..
Hope this is not your problem Tay....
How do you code a new battery and I don't seem to have the battery "bars" you guys are talking about - can you help?

Fortunately for me the car was sold to me with all the original Audi bits, the only thing I've added is the iphone adapter for the car telephone prep kit which is an Audi part.
As for the battery, its more about telling the car what type of battery it is, how it is best charged etc, presumably the charging systems needs to know about it. For me it seems over the top, batteries have been around a long time but maybe this is a conditioner as well and the charging is optimised for that perhaps.
You let the car computer systems know about the battery by programming it with details about the battery using a special cable and software. Essentially you are editing register values in the cars eproms not too disimilar to programming a basic computer.
The battery bars relate to a menu in the cars multi media system (MMI, some cars may or may not have this) ) there is a menu in there that just gives you a scale of 0-100% for battery power etc
When certain updates are done to the MMI it can knock out menu options such as the battery meter and heating/speed options.
There is an issue with some earlier versions of the firmware that controls the MMI that can cause the radio system to carry on working even when the car is switched off this should be detectable by looking at the power drain when the car is off..
This is my MMI:

Sorry in a bit of a rush - but had same problem on 2006 3.0tdi quattro, the drain on battery was the audio/ sat nav, these can takes ages to sleep because of the TMC updates, and i sussed a 0.5amp draw on battery from them, remove fuse 0 amps, I have wired a relay to shut them down when car is switched of and turn it on when the car us switched onl, basicaly a relay on fuse 7 in boot (nav/radio) wired to aswitched live.
By the way my battery is the original, and works fine, as long as radio does not kill it when parked.

just turn tmc off, the battery can handle up to 0.070 amps before its classed as a drain but ideally 0.030 amps is the ideal consumption for a closed circuit.

The alternator should output over 14V with a full load ( headlights, heated rear window , blower, air-con , hazards, wipers , etc) with engine rpm at about 2K. Halfords will do a battery load test for free (but they will try to sell you a new one ! ). 800mA drain is massive - this will soon drain a perfect battery in a few days.

Thanks VWC - have a new battery - has been checked a couple of times - this is fine.
Just have a gut feeling it's something to do with the software!!!!!

the dsp amp package can be updated but in general if its pulling a drain then its defective, the update for the drain is for tmc activation and this affects the radio not the dsp.
Do not go anywhere near halfords, the battery test can be done in two ways
make sure the no load voltage is above 12.5 volts prior to any testing, if its not recharge for 24 hours
When a test is made using express static current measurement, 70 mA is output as the maximum permissible
static current. The difference can be attributed to an additional tolerance of 20 mA.
1 via vag com as long as the battery manger is encoded with the 10 digit battery number for amperage etc.
2 You need a scope meter with amp clamp and draw mode test
allow the vehicle to stand for 2 hours with the doors, bonnet and boot locks in the locked position but all open to access the interior remove the keys and all consumers switched off
after 2 hours connect a calibrated amp clamp to the battery negative and then set it up for a draw mode test, take into account the battery manager will send regular signals out but they will show up a small spikes.
I prefer an overnight 8 hour test
inspect the 8 hour test and look for peaks or uniform drain
If there is a drain
run a loop break test via vcds and make sure the optical bus is ok
check for any under or over voltage fault codes in any control unit
refer to battery manager history log and decode the values to determine the time and date and consumer pulling current
eg battery history event 2005-04-18, 10:07:00 * 0002 hours 00.70 A, static current
example battery manger results showing terminal 15 staying on
00.05 A, mean static current
19.75 A, mean total current
-10.73 A, current at time of history data entry
17 %, battery state of charge
03 Mohms, internal resistance of the battery
+0118 Ah, energy throughput
-00067 Ah, energy balance
009624 km, mileage
2005-06-13, 23:24:47 time and date
Hazard warning OFF
Side lights OFF
Low beam headlight OFF
Fog light OFF
Main beam OFF
07.1 hours, terminal 15 ON
07.1 hours, data bus awake
007.1 hours, previous standstill period
00 number of data bus ON/OFF cycles
01 number of terminal 15 ON/OFF cycles
01 number of breakdown entries in history database
002 number of fitted (replaced) batteries in vehicle
isolate this circuit until the drain is located
remember every time you retest allow at least 2 hours before testing the drain, this allows all the networks to power down or go to address 19 and put the networks to sleep
If the findings suggest the dsp is faulty then fit a most repeater in line and replacing the dsp in the most circuit and retest to confirm the drain or difference in amperage after 8 hours
By just disconnecting the dsp you are creating a open circuit in the most loop and it needs to be fully running for accurate testing, hence the most repeater to relay the fibre optic in place of the dsp
My power drain is .8amp - Audi Deby have disconeccted the Sound ECU.
I am very interested in this Software update before I relucantly buy a new unit.
Has anyone had experience that this has worked?
A questions for the knowledge base here -
1) Hopw do I get the details on my software - as in your screen shot Tay!
2) How do I get the software upgrade? is it available from some kind people of this forum or an Audi Only Rip Off......... ;-)
Appreciate all the comments guys - so new to all this!
I've not got my car back yet but when I do I can talk you through the menus, or I'm sure somebody here will know it by heart.
I have heard that Audi will sell you the updates for a very reasonable fee, some tens of pounds. there are things you should do before before upgrading it. the process of upgrading is pretty simple everything working as before is a bit more of an issue.
You may need a Special cable for your car and the software and some assistance to use it. I lost several settings form the menus when I upgraded.

Looks like all of us suffering problems when it has got cold is not a coincidence.
A8tech - as this seems to be a faulty batch of radios, could we complain to audi and get it replaced by them?
Well,
Day 21 of 50 of not being able to use the car!!
Audi contacted my garage today and said the CCU has been fitted and "as they expected" it has now shown the fault they "thought they might find".
Apparently the BOSE unit is now to blame. Audi have ordered the part now and will be fitted before I lose the will to live.
Will update as and when needed.
Garage has called and car is supposedly ready...they have confirmed that the Bose Amp has been replaced and this was the cause of the issues.
Cold mornings and the next few weeks will tell if that is correct. I'll get this back afternoon and see if it starts in the morning!!.
A little concerned, my car is 7 months old and today got home from work (50 mile journey) 5 mins later popped out in the car when I went to start the car DIS showed a low battery warning, and said battery will recharge whilst driving. no unusualy high load on the run home ie just lights, radio, satnav and fan.
The shortest run the car has had in the last week has been 50 miles and had a run of 800 miles at the weekend so I can't understand why battery voltage would be low,
I've read through all of the above and picked out a bit of a theme regarding the TMC coincidently it was going a bit mad on the way home thinking there where traffic disruptions and road works my entire way home to which there where none.

I'd suggest turning off the TMC updates for a start and confirm which version of the MMI software you are running as some versions are known to cause issues.

Software version is BNav_EU_K0029_1_D1
Being as the car is not very old have there been many updates since april?
ok now realising thats probably not the software version......where might I find out what MMI software version?? tried all of the menu's I know?

Apologies, I missed the bit where it said 7 months old...I wouldnt have though there was issues with a new car. Take it to Audi get them to run it through their systems..
Does it have problems starting in the morning or is it just the battery meter?
I don't have the battery meter enabled, it was just a message in the DIS saying "battery low, driving will recharge the battery"
Car works and starts fine, just really threw me after a decent run, car is due a service in 2k miles so I'll get it checked out then.

Ah ok, mine comes up in the MMI and a scale from 0-100%.
I wouldnt wait tbh, cold weather getting worse, its a battery killer.

That is in fact your software version - you have MMI 3G rather than MMI 2G and the version numbers are entirely different between the two.
My car had a software update a few weeks ago - the version number was updated from HNav_EU_K0022_2_D1 to HNav_EU_K0031_3_D1 (mine has HDD Nav High). I'd expect there is a similar DVD Nav Low version update too - check with your dealer.
Regards,
MF.
So far, some pretty damn cold mornings and the Audi is starting no problem, a bit smokey which is a worry but starting nonetheless.
Seems the Bose Amp may have well been to blame..however, tomorrow is Monday and it hates Mondays :)
December 1st, -3 deg's C and car started perfectly fine.
I'm now confident that all is okay with the world..
Well, I think they have well and truly fixed it, -7 this morning and not hesitation at all.
Great news! Thanks for the update.
Cheers!
MF.

Is this worth flagging in a dedicated thread? Could be a reason for a service recall?

How do you code a new battery and I don't seem to have the battery "bars" you guys are talking about - can you help?
The two photos attached show the Menu for selecting Battery Level, then the actual Battery bars.
I've read and re-read this thread a lot lately and decided to take a chance on re-charging the battery. Given mine has shown one bar (10%) for a few months now, I thought it was a very tired battery but reading about various 'leaks' made me wonder if enabling TMC on my car has contributed to the problem.
Anyway, yesterday I bought a smart charger (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_categoryId_1 65629_productId_270511_langId_-1?cm_mmc=Shopping-_-Google%20Product%20Search-_-Car+Parts/Car+Battery+Accessories-_-Halfords+Smart+12V+Battery+Charger&source=shopping&istCompanyId=b8708c57-7a02-4cf6-b2c0-dc36b54a327e&istItemId=mrillq&istBid=t) from Halfords in Salisbury (last one on the shelf) and connected it up this morning. Went out and had a look after a couple of hours and the battery meter bars had climbed to two. So I disconnected the charger and started the car - started immediately - and then left the engine running for about 20 minutes. Battery meter climbed to 90% - as per photo - so I turned off engine, re-connected charger, went out an hour later and charge was at 100%.
Did a couple of re-starts of engine, still staying at 100%, so perhaps the £53 was money well spent and the battery has been 'recovered'
