1992 Mkiii Golf 1.8GL petrol (one of the very first mk3's)

The car died 2 days ago, initial symptoms loss of power, but would idle roughly. Now it won't start at all.

All plugs sparking, but all bone dry, no smell of fuel in the pistons.

I haven't done a compression check but no loss of oil or coolant, not overheated, and no emulsified oil, so I doubt that is the problem.

I've got the top off the carb body, it's the single point fuel injection version.

Fuel is getting to the carb, so fuel pump okay.

Fuel injector measures 1.4 ohms between it's two pins, so is within spec.

If I measure on the two pins going to the fuel injector, nothing at all. I've tried with a volt meter, and also tried my oscilloscope, in case I'm looking for pulses, but nothing.

So I suspect ECU or a wiring harness problem.

So the first question, where is the ECU located on this car? The Haynes manual tells you nothing other than take the car to a VAG dealer.

Ecu is in the scuttle planel under the windscreen, very easy to get to. Does your car have an immobiliser, aftermarket or otherwise?

hi

Thanks for the repply.

It's all fixed now and running again. took a while to find, but a wire had snapped on the wiring harness where it plugs into the trottle body, meaning no 12V supply was getting to the injector.

Easy fix, but it took a lot of searching to find it.
