Hi all i was wondering if i could get some advice please,

I bought a new stereo for my 2000 vw Golf tdi. I bought a jvc kd-avx1 if it helps. When i installed it the equaliser settings that i would save would reset every time i switched off the engine. I later found that this was because there was no constant memory live wire going to the cd player.

So i took it in to the local audio shop and they changed some wires around the back and got it sorted and the settings are memorised now. Great! BUT i have a subwoofer and amplifier in the boot and i have just realised that even when the engine is off the amplifier light stays on which would mean the amplifier is constantly on.

My question is: is this not going to drain my battery or is it just the light on and the amplifier isn't drawing any power? If it is going to drain my battery what can i do about it?

Hope for some replies (maybe from Jim aswell as he seems to be an expert in this field ;) ) thankyou

Hi mate, no, the Amp should have a light permenantly on, thats the live feed from the battery to the amplifier, thats normal. That it only an LED which is lower power consumption and will not drain your battery. Unless your running a competition style set up.

You'll havea thin blue wire running from the head unit to the amplifier, thas the "remote cable" every time you turn your ignition on ( and stereo turns on, ) it then becomes live and turns the amplifier on.

The amp LED is just like having your TV on standby, there is power always going to it, but it's not using anything ( well not much anyway )

Perfectly safe.

Hope this helps.

thank you very much you have put my mind to rest. I was just worried because before i got this memory live wire thing connected the light on the amplifier didnt used to stay on after i switched the engine off. But you seem to know what your talking about and i dont so i'll take your advice. thank you

I had exactly the same issue, when I installed my Head Unit, switched wires.

Mine is all sorted, and I've had sub and amp for a while, working fine.

Just as a tip: Every few weeks, double check the connection of the red 12v power cable thats bolted to your battery.

As I have heard of problems with people not putting it on as tight as they could, and after a few weeks of bumps it's come loose, this creates a problem. So double check it every few weeks make sure it's still tight and snug.
