G'day.
Got a rather frustrating problem with old Gumpert which seems to have been getting progressively worse over the last few months.
The idle speed seems to be far too low once the engine has warmed up. So low infact, that it occasionally stalls. Fun!
The thing is though, the carb (Pierburg 2E2) is a recon unit - only 9 months old, (with new carb mount) and as far as I can see, everything is pukka, 3/4 point unit comes in, idles at 2k RPM when cold for a few seconds, then drops down to 1500, then slowly down from there as it progressively warms, until it splutters along at 500rpm, stinking of fuel, trying to cut out in the process.
I'm assuming this could be linked, but the temperature isn't reading optimum (showing a 1/4 on the gauge) and not seeming to kick out full heat from the heaters.
"Thermostat!!!" I hear you shout, but that was replaced with a genuine VW one in Feb. Could it really have failed that quickly? Plus the autochoke get scalding hot within 30 seconds of starting the car from cold.
My mechanic is taking it next week to fit a new thermostat anyway, but is there anything un-toward going on in there?
1990 1.8 GL.
Cheers for any input!
