Mmi 2g, 3g?

What's the difference?
I'm getting the hang of most of the buzz words involved with my new car but2G/3G is alluding me. :confused:

2/3G means 2nd or 3rd Generation Nav systems

2007 will be 2G

3G is the later Nav system with (amongst other bits) a higher res screen and a hard drive to store music on. Wasnt available on 2007 A6.

OK - now I'm confused. My A6 is a 2010 with the DVD-based sat nav. I thought it was therefore 2G but a couple of nights ago my car was plugged into VCDS, which reported that my car has MMI 3G. Can anybody clarify the differences in a 2010 model please?

Have you got an internal hard drive to store music/nav maps on and SD card slot? If so then you have 3G, if not it'll be the 2g system. Post a picture if you want full confirmation of exactly what you have..........

There's no hard drive in my car and no joystick in the middle of the turny-dial knob thing. The sat nav is DVD-based and I can't play DVD media. I therefore assumed it was a 2G system as you say... but confused about why VCDS reported it as a 3G system.

Are there 3G Basic and 3G High versions? The original brochure for my car doesn't mention the version and as far as I can tell, neither does the user manual!

Your car has the 3G system, but DVD based. There is a DVD and HDD version of the 3G system. (Tech Pack Low (DVD) and Tech Pack High (HDD)

Not according to the brochure for the 2010 A6 nor the owner's manual. ;)
HDD-based sat-nav was a £500 option on my car when I specced it.

Mine's the 2010 model, so it's the C6.

I have just bought a 2010 A6 (not picked it up yet). It has Bose but not the AMI. I phoned 2 dealers to ask about getting the AMI fitted, they quote £399 on the website. When I gave them my reg number, they both said that I have the 3G system fitted. As mentioned above, it is not the hard drive system but DVD based. They said that Audi have not released a retro kit for the 3G system, so I would have to go to one of the after market suppliers.
So it appears there is a 3G DVD based system, but does anybody know what it offers over the 2G DVD system (does it have the better screen etc)?
