Hey all,

I have a 2003 1.8T with a fair few miles on it (140k) and this morning it stalled twice in traffic. I drive 40 miles to my work on a motorway each day and this morning when I came off the motorway junction and queued in traffic the engine simply died and the amber triangle with the circle round it came on (Sorry, don't know the technical name for it).

I fired it up again thinking it was a blip but it idled rough for a few seconds and died again.

About a month a ago I noticed that on cold start the power is jumpy, not quite like a dropped plug but the power isn't there. When cruising at 70mph (3000rpm in 5th) the power is fine but low down there isn't much. It's better when warm but not great.

About 12-15 month ago I replaced the MAF sensor because there was certainly a power issue after it wouldn't pull up a hill in 3rd. I've also had to call out the RAC to change over all of the coil packs at some point or other in the past 18 months (2 of which twice).

I've read that the fuel pump relay on these Audi's might create a problem like this.

Anyone have any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Richie.

i've had similair problem and issue with my 1.8T.
Mine has very randomly died on me in traffic 2-3 times a few months back.
I've only ever heard of this issue once in another forum.
MAF is usually not the problem with that stalling.
However the other person said he had problem with vaum hoses/pipes once these were replaced the car was perfectly fine again.
Mine has totally dissaperaed after changing to a new battery and also 4 new coil packs.
I used to get fault codes for intermittent low signal from MAF and ABS module but that doesn't happen now.
Try and get fault code read.
I would be inclined to check for any split/crack pipes.
then checking battery

These are my experiences and what i have read of another users problem with very similair problems.
I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but getting codes read and checking the pipes and battery won't exactly cost you anything so i can recommend them to you as things to do without feeling i'm sending you off in the wrong direction.

Thanks for the reply, I'll take a look tonight at the battery and will dig out the VAGCOM to see what codes are there.

Cheers,

Richie.

had the stalling at traffic lights issue and I ended up replacing 2 split pipes which cured the issue.

Both pipes very easy to replace and accessible.

1. Small L shaped black pipe on the intake system, approx 150mm long and approx 15mm diamater. just to the left of the intake manifold. part # 06B 133 783 BC

2. black T-piece oil breather pipe. approx 40mm diameter at ends and 100mm lenght coming out of top of the back of the rocker cover. part # 06B 103 221 P

both these parts were for an 02 1.8T AVJ
