Newbie - advice sought

I've currently got a Golf 2.0 TDI 140 with DSG, but my other half wants to change it (in about 12mths) for an Audi A4. No problem there as I've had 3 in the past and all were ace.
However I've just read an "Honest John" owner review for the B8 which was really scathing and mentioned (among other things) that it does't even have footrests - is this true?
My thoughts on the new car would be 2.0 diesel, probably SE spec, manual as I've read some not very good stuff about the multitronic gearbox, and maybe Quattro.
Any views, info, personal experiences etc would be welcome

hi mate "honest john" is a little like a forum in that most people only mention faults they have, if i was you id have a look at a few and see what you think

You've loads of time to research then, havent you??!!!!

Drive one- see for yourself. The B8 is a great car and a huge improvement over previous models, footrests or not.:beerchug:

I intend to do plenty research and the review I read did smack a bit of the someone with a bit of an axe to grind, although the footrest point seemed a bit odd (& worrying).
my golf has cruise control - which is great, especially in europe - and footrests either side of he pedals - so it seemed very odd that the Audi had neither

I really like my A4 (see sig below) and it is a huge leap forward compared to my previous B7 2.0TDI Sline.
I also have a Golf (see sig below) and great as it is (power aside) the A4 is Better car.
Multitronic?????? If you like DSG you will love Multi.

Thanks for that - I'm very happy with the power in the Golf - I guess the weight of the bigger Audi will take just a bit of the edge off it - hence maybe thinking about the 170.
I'm fairly pleased with the DSG & the missus loves it - but I'm thinking that the next car might be a keeper and I'm a bit concerned about possible future reliability / repair costs on an auto - not sure if I should be but it's just a niggle

Had mine about 5 months now, multitronic is ace just to tempting to keep it in s all the time,and i can only speak for the auto pedal setup but there is most definately a wacking big footrest to the left.

I've had my A4 TDIe Technik for just over three weeks and it's great. I went for the TDIe as it's a company car and the emissions keeps the dreaded down.
If I were buying my own I might go for the 3l TDI Quattro ( the wife will find out when her Honda's a bit older! ) but the Technik spec is great for the price.

I had a golf gt 140 manual for years, and upgraded to an A4 last March. An upgrade it definately was- there is no comparison to the golf. I should add that i loved my golf, and still think it was a great car. The A4 is in a different league though. The drive is more refined, and the cabin is totally upgraded. I also had a problem with the golf understeering/going sideways at wet roundabouts- the audi is much more composed.

I have the multi gearbox and I think its brilliant. I've heard great things about the dsg, but a friend who runs a VW franchise insists the multi is better. Mine has a footrest, and as an auto there is plenty of space for your feet. You will find complaints on the forum from the manual guys about an off set driving position, however others see no issue. You will have to test drive one yourself to see.

I my case there is no comparison to the golf, but every now and again I see a nice golf and think I'd love to rake the *** of it for old times sake! :D

Why not test drive a 140 se or s-line multi and report back with your findings?

the only problem I had with any of my previous Audis was that they seemed to have mastered the "just too late" concept -ie any parts that were ever required outside of normal servicing - had to be ordered from Germany - I had an A4 in the mid 90's and brake discs took a fortnight to arrive ! they were so convinced of the inherent reliability that virtually no spares were held in stock.
I'm really looking forward to the prospect of another one
