View Full Version : Climate Control Gets Warm, Then Goes Cold ...

Hi all,
I was hoping one of you guys could help with a small problem I'm having with my A4's climate control system.
Basically I can stick the climate control on manual at say 19 degrees and for around 5-10 minutes I get nice warm air. Then after so many minutes the hot air stops and stars blowing cold.
If you turn up the temperature half a degree the hot air continues for say another 5-10 minutes and tnen starts blowing cold again.
The only way I have found to consistently get hot air out of the thing for longer than 10 minutes is to stick it on "HI" which results in my sweating for the rest of my journey to work.
Has anyon else ever experienced this? To me it sounds like an electrical/sensor problem rather than a heater matrix problem. What do you guys think?

without seeming to state the obvious, climate control maintains the incar temperature at the specified temp.
So if you set it to 19 degrees, it will blow warm air, until it's reached that temp, if the temp then exceeds 19 degrees, it will use the air con to cool - maintaining the temperature constantly.
I don't think there's actually anything wrong with your CC, it sounds as though it's working as it ought to?

mine does the same and i believe that is what it's meant to do.

Heya guys,
Thats what I thought however if I put the car at 19 degrees there is no way that the inside of the car is 19 degrees when it starts pumping cold air through (I've tried with a electronic temp gauge).
Also the windows start to steam up even with it set at 20 degrees in car (Surely not normal) and I don't recall this being a problem before which makes me think something is not quite right.
If it was an electrical problem and ideas what it might be?

If its steaming-up, there's something not right.
Is the pollen-filter blocked?
Is it set on recirculation?
You could try disconnecting the battery to see if
the cc wants to re-set itself.

I'm confused - you said it pumped hot, then cold air?
Have you got the CC on Eco? If you have, turn it off - that'll be the source of dampness and the cause of the misting windows.

Push the auto button, set the temp to 22 degrees. Drive until the engine temp guage is at 90 degrees. Now within 5 minutes, the inside of the car should be comfortable.
If the ECO light is on, turn it off - It doesn't seem to save any fuel, and just makes the windows mist up. Also make sure the recirc is off.
The climate control does sometimes blow cold air when I'd expect hot, but it does sort itself out quite quickly.
If you're still convinced that something is wrong:
It doesn't seem that you've got a gas problem, as the chiller seems to be working. I'd start by checking the condition of the pollen filter. Then do a fault scan to see if any faults are stored. The climate module will store a fault if any of the flaps aren't working.

One other thought:
Check whether the cabin temperature sensor is blocked. I think it's behind a little grill on the dashboard - Mine seems to attract a lot of dust, so maybe that getting blocked might stop the climate control from knowing what the temperature is, so not being able to control properly.
