When I bought my A6 Saloon (3.0Tdi tiptronic) in 2005 (new) I had the RAC Trackstar system fitted together with Speedsafe which beeps at you to warn of speed cameras. They have been taking £8 a month off me ever since for updates. Then they said they wanted £11 a month. Sod that. So I bought an Inforad K2 unit which is great when it works but has huge difficulty getting and keeping a lock on the satellites. They say it is because the A6 has an athermic windshield (heat reflecting?).
Can anyone confirm if this is true and suggest a part of the windscreen where the athermic bit might not be?
My previous A6 was a 2005 (55) 2.0 TDi S line, and I successfully used a PDA clipped to an air vent and running Tomtom as my satnav. It would occasionally struggle to see satellites, but to be honest I put that down to the cheap GPS technology it was using. Some days, however, it would lock on to 12 satellites, so I very much doubt the car had an athermic windscreen.

Heat reflective windscreens do cause satnav signal problems. Some screens have a small area which isn't coated to put the satnave near to.
Mounting the gps receiver near the side window rather than the middle of the dashboard should help, otherwise, can you get an external antenna for your gps? You might even be able to fit a combined gps/radio antenna and use that as an external antenna.
