I've recentley had a few problems with my 2002, 1.6 Golf.

Had problems with my lamba sensor and cam belt tensioners but thats not what i'm here for.

I've now got a problem with my rear axel bushes. There seems to be a rather excessive split.

I've had a quote from my local VW dealer of £265 but was wondering if anyone could tell me if it's easy enough to do yourself.

The part itself is pretty cheap on it's own so i can only asume the rest of the cost comes from labour.

Its a hard job i've heard! Go to an independent garage they should do the same job for cheaper.
Watever you do DNT go to National Tyres, i just had my front wish bones / bushes changed from them and im not a happy bunny!
(Although maybe it was just bad luck for me!!!!)
Good luck!

Apparently, the rear axle bushes are a common problem. I had mine changed about 3wks ago from a local garage for £100 labour + my own parts, which I bought from GSF for about £16 for each bush... so £132 in total. Main dealer quoted me £385 to have it done, and said its a full day job. It took my local mechanic less than 4 hours to do, so £25p/h ain't that bad.

Hi,
They charged me £350 (which also included front discs and pads changed) but when i went to collect my car the battery was completing dead! i have had no problems with my battery previously and for it too completely go like that was odd, I asked other mechanics and they all said that cant happen in the space of a few hours. National tyres told me that the battery could not be charged as it was "unserviceable". I had to buy a new battery but as it was the end of the day they were closing it meant i had to leave my car there overnight. Also they had broken some air pipe in the engine (cant rem wat it is called) but they replaced that for free but only cause my dad noticed it.... After all that and the arguing we did with them he only gave us a £10 discount!!!
I need to get my back discs and pads changed trust me i aint going there again!
This is my experience which is off putting for me but may not be for others...

I mite just get my rear ones checked if they are a common problem...

i smell a rat with the battery saga...umm

i was quoted £30+ vat labour charge to do rear discs, its not a hard job but i was felling a bit lazy! i paid £38 discs + £18 pads total £91.25 inc lab
which is better than vw ******* £225!

i am not keen on using these tyre&exhaust places for anything other than what they normally sell/do, one place cocked up an oil change on a mates car overfilled it blew some seals and cost a packet to put right he had to sue in the end! :aargh4:

Just had mine done. Buy Powerflex bushes from awesome GTi store (about 50quid)- they are much quicker to fit - my garage charged £114 to fit inc vat, so not too bad. The car feels much better now!

thanks for all your replies guys.

Just been looking at some parts online the most i'm looking to pay is like £25 so thats a bonus and I'm hoping to get a friend of mine to give me a hand fitting them. Fortunatley he's a mechanic so should have a bit of a better idea how they go than i will.

I'll let you know how i get on

Cheers again
