The rear pistons screw in to retract.
You can bodge this but the correct tool <£20 makes it much easier and reduces the risk of damaging the rubbers.

Thats correct...
You need to screw these back in all the way... You can make a tool with an old 20mm socket... and cut groves into it in the right places.. ... or just buy the tool..

Yep, If you try and force it back in without the rotation then you will break it.

:beerchug: Bought the tool & like you said, piece of cake. Audi forum saves the day again. Ive been told Haynes dont do a manual for these yet. While Im on, does any one have any ideads on a sparodically noisy aircon fan? sometimes it growls, sometimes its fine, once it wouldnt turn off! Sounds like an expensive part, any ideas?
Cheers

Well then, the other day -"ding" -message comes up - "renew brake pads"------SO , I,m going to have a go myself !!! .. after reading the postings I,m going to wind the rear pistons back with the "special socket" and the front pads are straightforward BUT -- can anyone tell me whether the rear pistons rotate clockwise ( righthand thread) or anticlock (lefthand thread) ??? OR will it be obvious to a mechanically minded DIY guy !! AND - will the warning reset after pad renewal OR will it need to be plugged in on a vag com comp

I cant remember if its anti or clockwise.... i think its clockwise.... you can always test it when the caplier is off.
In regards to the light..... once the FRONT pads are changed and sensors reconnected, the light will go off..
(the sensors are on the front pads only.)

:D Thank you very much RickT, I shall renew brake pads all round this weekend . I wonder if there is some form of warning for the rear brake pads built into the electric parking brake mechanism or, if pads are not checked do wait until you get the "graunch " of metal/metal contact. --- I was surprised to find no wires on the rear pads ?????????? Thanks once again.........

Thanks for that Coolio, That,s cheap -However I shall do-it-myself and spend the money on top grade brake pads that have the added bonus of greatly reduced brake pad dust and so make less work of keeping the wheels clean ;);)
