My Golf seems to have died. I was driving about 10 mph when on trying to accelerate there was no power and clouds of whitish smoke from the exhaust. Now it won't start and chucks out more smoke when I depress the throttle whilst trying to start.
The car has 177000 miles on the clock and full service history, the cam belt was done at 135000 by last owner.
Any ideas before I send it to the great scrapyard in the sky, something I'd rather not have to do as it's been a great car up until this.

any chance of finding the engine code, its on the sticker by the spare wheel. it sounds like a turbo boost fault, but that wouldnt stop it from starting, but if you can come back with the engine code and we can go from there, and the age of it as well would help. the code may also be on the cambelt cover or the service book, and will be 3 letters, like ANU.

The engine code is AHU 099 611 if that helps.

try removing the top part of the timing belt cover and see if theres still a timing belt there.

that was one of the first thing I thought of. looks intact to me. Any chance it could've slipped?

could have slipped, or lost some teeth. try turning the engine over and see what the cam does. usually lost teeth are around the crank pulley. crack off the injectors and make sure theres fuel coming out of them as well. theres not much on one of those engines that will prevent it from starting though.

Thanks I'll have a look on Friday morning and see what's to see and take it from there I guess.

Cheers

Nope definitely diesel from empty and I'd done about 120 miles before it went. there was no warning at all running sweet as a nut then nothing  got a few days off to look at it but if it's too costly looks like the knackers yard for it :(

if philbr doesn't want it, you might get a better price if you stuck it on ebay, rather than weighing it in.
