We're heading up to Scotland this winter and are thinking ahead to be prepared in case it snows. We have an A4 Avant (tyre size 235 45/17) and wondered what people thought about the socks that are on the market? Not sure snow chains would fit as we don't have a lot of clearance (about an inch). Just wanted to know people's experiences really and what you recommend.

Just posted this in the 'wheels' section, where it should have really gone in the first place! :Blush2:
I would fit winter tyres. That is the best aid to driving on snow and ice.
Those will probably be thinner than your stock tyres so you will be able to fit chains when it gets really interesting. ;)

Socks or some winters are your only options, chains will not have sufficient clearance if you're running that tyre size on Sport suspension.
I use some 16in steel rims from a Sharan with some winters when we go to The Alps, you really can't beat winter rubber.

Forget snow chains! I tried them this past winter on the same car as yours and had a nightmare. Frozen hands (wheel arches full of snow etc) Marked alloys due to chains rubbing, max 20mph when chains on, and the hassle of fitting them at the side of the road. Get some old alloys and fit snow tyres. The only option really. Surely this winter can't be as bad but you're right to be prepared.

would you say it's best to change all 4, or would it be alright with the
front wheels or whichever had drive?

All the latest recommendations have indicated that its dangerous to
use on 2 wheels only.
Better with four... socks, chains or snow tyres.
