Just finished spending 5 hours replacing this. Problem is that I used a generic replacement regulator from Eurocarparts (£50) rather than the £150 VW one.

The glass could not be persuaded to stop rising too far/or at the correct angle to prevent it smashing if I had shut the door after raising the window.

Eventually I realised the generic reg relies on the glass hitting the top of the window frame to tell the motor to stop turning. In a cabrio there isn't a frame at the top, On the original regulator there are adjustable stops on the window clamps which hit the underside of the door which stops the motor.

After much faffing about I realised that the window clamps/stops on the old regulator could be swapped for the non adjustable ones on the generic replacement. It's not a big job - about 10 minutes to swap the two.

Hope this saves somebody from pulling their hair out as I have just done....

On the cabrio window mechanism, there are a coumple of adjusters that set the maximum height of the windows. You can hear them thump when the window closes all the way. These are accessable from the underside of the door by removing a pair of rubber grommets. Once you have done this (you need a small socket set with a star drive - can't remember the exact size) you reset the elacronics by disconnecting the battery and following the procedure in the Haynes manual.

This worked on my 2000 cabrio.

Would I be correct in assuming that the window regulator motor is the same for all Golf Mk3's, including the Cabrio and that it is just the regulator part that is model specific?

If so does anyone know where I might pick up a used motor in the St Albans area?

Thanks
