The bottom end is tough. Have you removed the head to examine the damage, it may be just a few valves and a new camshaft and pulley. Check for piston damage and the cause for the cam pulley to shear, the timing belt may have jumped due to a faulty tensioner and the valves hitting the pistons stalled the cam shaft and thus the shear. How much do you wont for the car?
I'm always looking for damaged 2.0 pd engines and I will take the hole car if the price is right
You will struggle for replacement pistons but the short motor will cost £1500 + vat and the cylinder head should be repairable if not there around £800 but that's only supplied with the valves plus the old parts are exchange.

If the Mech says it is not that bad, they why does he want to swop the engine. There are thousands of car driving around with dings in the pistons from clipping valves. Regards Peter
