I don't suppose ther are many people out there that can help here but lets see.

After a drive I put my car in the garage, then went in there for something and could hear a very faint knocking ( at night with doors closed). So quiet my wife could not hear it. It turned out to be the fuel tank, openeing the filler stopped it.

It is not a problem, it just puzzles me, the noise goes on for hours, I know it is the tank venting, but do cars not have a vent pipe or vent hole in the cap anymore?
I can only assume the tank pressure is very slowly returning to atmospheric, and modern polution laws prevent the venting of petrol fumes.

So if anyone else spends time in their garage at night, have you heard this, it is more evident if you put your ear down by the rear wheel arch.

As you say vehicle aren't allowed to vent fuel straight into the atmosphere. VW use the Evaporative Emissions system (EVAP). I'm not sure why its making this knocking noise? ;)
