Had the car for a few months now, and realised I never actually tested the alarm so I get it and lock it with the remote, wait a bit the LEDs are blinking rapidly then slowly. I jump about the hazards go off but no sound. I get out and lock the car and now I get no Hazard flash when I lock it either. (before I did get a flash but never got a blip sound and just assumed it was not something it did)

I have done some searching and people have problems with the alarm battery going, have I just drained what was left of it? and that's why it wont work? given its a 1999 A3 1.6 SE its been a while.

even though it does not flash on locking anymore the door lock LEDs still work and I tried the same locking myself in the car routine and the alarm does trigger, just no sound.

Central locking still works and I get no warning lights, hazards do flash on unlocking the car with remote. I thought it may be a fuse but I cant identify which one if it has one.

The car has to be set up for a beep on locking.
No hazard flash suggests that something is still open, check the doors boot and bonnet are closed.
The back up battery that is in the alarm is prone to leaking and damaging the PCB.
Have a search on here for a "how to" on fixing a dead siren.

A fault scan of your car will help pinpoint the problem.

thanks for the reply, I found that in a google search as a common problem and reshut every door, boot and bonnet, still no luck, no hazard flash but the door LEDs do flash.

I guess I will have to get it checked, just worried about the no hazard flash now.

I can use this to find the fault code right?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAG-USB-DIAGNOSTIC-CABLE-409-1-OBD2-II-LEAD-VAG-COM-/330399696070?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4ced5b44c6

The interface shows its can scan for fault codes:

oh and using "siren" as search term as you suggested brought up more threads about the alarm battery, and I also found this thread when seem to be the problem I am having exactly:

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=95588&highlight=siren+battery

and seems it is the battery pretty much going, I think the battery has had enough time to leak now, I have had a look at the siren box its covered in foam padding below the back left lights below the CD changer. Looks like it will be difficult to get out, i would have to remove the side panels somehow.

Look in the vagcom section for a member in your area with VCDS to scan the car.
