strange one this, when starting golf 3 1.8, or just putting ignition lights on, rev counter dips to below zero, weird whirring noise from instruments like electric motor and lose clock and trip mileage goes back to zero, also lost central locking at same time, bad earth or relay?

I had EXACTLY the same issue. - until I found the answer out on here after a fair bit of searching!
The fault is almost certainly due to a blown 15A fuse. Open the fuse cover and check out the 15A fuse on the far right (its marked up as the interior lighting fuse). It should be blown. Replace it and bingo - back to normal.
To Moderators:
Can this electrical fault perhaps go in a central locking fault sticky?? it seems to be quite a common one.

Hi,
Let me know how you get on... Amazing to think I was completely stumped by this one until I realized it was a bloody fuse! - a fuse marked as for "interior lighting". It would have been a help if VW could have put "Central locking" too on the description. I mean, central locking is quite important - more important than interior lighting perhaps?? - though that would have been too easy for VW wouldn't it??
Cheers indeed :beerchug:

Hi,
It's all linked together. My central locking failed and the instrument whirring started happening with no interior lighting or cig lighter etc. Primarily though due to having no central locking....
I blew the fuse again today replicating the fault. I was spraying up my car and left the ignition key in at position 1 to ensure I could turn the wheels to access the wheel arches to spray etc..
At this time, I plugged in my solar battery top up charger whilst the key was still in position 1. This blew the fuse. Lucky I had a replacement to hand. so this taught me to plug in these things when you don't have the key at position 1 :)
I think that's how it must have blown last time. Must be due to the current draw or something. The solar panel is pretty powerful for what it is...

I have the same problem. Central locking and clock reset.
This forum is bloody amazing.
I've had a few headaches with my MK3 and they've all been solved on here.
Nice one. Thanks again.
