Hey all i have a 2005 polo with the 1.4 BKY engine. About 4 mths ago it developed a miss. Replaced X2 ignition coils and all 4 spark plugs - Fixed.
Now it lacks power and after a while exhaust manifold glows red!
I have:
replaced the other 2 ignition coils - still the same
replaced all spark plugs - still the same
dropped the engine pipe to inspect the cat, all blocked up and in pieces replaced the cat and still the same.
removed & cleaned throttle body - still the same - also coded using VAG
removed & cleaned EGR valve - still the same - also coded using VAG
renewed fuel filter - still the same
have checked fuel pressure and at idle it is aprox 42-43 psi and when i rev it it drops to about 40 psi.
when driving it sounds like it is pinging its head & has limited power.
If anyone can shed any light on this, it would be great.

On the one hand that sounds like it is over fuelling from a stuck open injector and on the other it sounds like a valve timing issue. I presume there are no fault codes stored? Have you checked the valve timing and done a compression test?

Thanks for your reply. No fault codes originally but then these came up yesterday.
17550 load calculation cross check: lower limit exceeded
P1142 -35-10 - intermittent
17573 long term fuel trim additive air; bank 1 range 1:system too rich
P1165 -35-00
the only other thing on VAG that i did notice was @ idle the % of load was exceeding the spec, from memory the upper limit was about 20% i think it was over this.
what should the timing be??
thanks for your reply.

(17550) Load detection Lower limit exceeded
This could be an inlet leak after the throttle body, a dirty throttle body, faulty MAP (Thrust) sensor or a faulty EGR valve. I suggest cleaning the throttle body and resetting it in Basic Settings 060.
(17573) Mixture adaptation range 1 rich limit exceeded
This could be the lambda sensor before the cat, the one after the cat, fuel pressure regulator, EGR valve, fuel in the engine oil, EVAP canister leak, faulty injector, a compression problem or other issues.

Sounds like its running to rich which points to a problem with the MAF. Sorry I can't be any more helpful than that :o

It does not have an Air Mass Meter (MAF).

It does not have an Air Mass Meter (MAF).
I bow to your superior knowledge, Crasher :o

just an update: changed the throttle body with a new one and went through all the basic settings in VAG, still the same?!?
will drop exhaust again to see if any more blockage - exhaust shop told me that there wasn't but hey they have been wrong before.
failing that i think i will change the o2 sensors.

alrighty then.................i did have this car at the exhaust shop and they replaced the cat. i asked what the rest of the system was like and they said 'great'. BULLS***....this vehicle has one cat in the engine down pipe and also another one after the flex join. punched the crap out of the cat and now great power and no 'glowing' exhaust manifold.
cheers for all help and comments
