The plastic door strip along the side of my 97 Golf Cabrio came partly away. It looked awful and got worse. In the end I removed the whole thing and tried to spruce up the plastic retaining clips that had been the cause of the problem. Now though I can't get the strip to stay flush to the door. I have tried refurbishing the (virtually antique) clips, adding double sided sticky tapes, even covering the pushins with blu-tac followed by no-more nails! Nothing keeps it stuck for long. Any advice or similar experience out there please? The car is looking ultra dodgy with the strip missing!
Apologies if I've posted in the wrong forum - I've no idea what VAG stands for :Blush2: (stop sighing all of u!) but other threads on here seemed to be of a similar nature.
Hopeful regards, Alex

Im looking into this soon, since one of my strips has a dodgy clip at the rear edge on my hatch - I expect the strips are pretty similar, I will pm you when i find a solution.
Although, im currently driving around with one side skirt because someone thought it would be funny to pull it off. So i know the feeling - the sad part is, my skirts are now discontinued and I need to buy a new set from somewhere, but thats on hold until I fix my exhaust.
Still, it looks great if youre looking at the left hand side! :approve:

Thanks Sammo. Hope we get somewhere soon, I'm worried about the bleak mid-winter!

silicone is your friend? I had a pair of dodgy window seals - bit of silicone later soon sorted that. Beauty is, it'll peel relatively easily if I ever need to renew.

Im not sure, the plastic is pretty tough, once its started peeling like a quaver its quite hard to straighten out again.
I guess its a problem with the plastics drying out from UV abuse etc, but you definately need to clip it, or stand there for 30mins waiting for the silicone sealant to set to find it pop off later.
Plus if you mess up with the glue, you get an awful mess on the paintwork.
Im trying to find where to buy those pop in umblella type clips to attach to the underside. I just need to find the time to head to a <insert hardware store here> etc.
A similar thing used to hold pc motherboards in, i dont know the official name for it :( But you squeeze the legs to get it in the hole, and they will spring out on the other side over the hole. (Similar to a rivet i guess, but plastic)
Anyway you get the idea!

Is it something along the lines of a rawlplug then??
I'm so glad I'm not alone in struggling to put names to all the hundreds of different plastic thingies used throughout a car's bodywork these days: So insignificant... until you need to replace one!:dunno::dunno::dunno:

Try something like this - Found today, replacing clips because whoever dented my car also pulled the side strip off. Nice.
Eitherway

After a crappy day at work I came home to find my package had arrived. Clips are spot on, and plenty of them! Made up now, will be sorting that tomorrow!
