Just bought a 2.0TDI -143 and having some issues.

When I depress the clutch pedal the engine noise changes and you can hear a mechanical clonking.

Also, there appears to be some clutch slip, but only one per gear change, ie, it will slip slightly (300-500rpm) then wont slip again until you change gear or pop the clutch in and out, this occurs north of 2000rpm.

I'm hoping the st4l3rs will fix this under warranty and not charge for a whole new clutch & assembly.

Does this sound like the thrust bearings that have gone or the fly wheel and can these be fixed without changing the whole lot.

It's going in next week to be looked at.

Thanks in adnvance

your car has a dual mass flywheel. it may be this thats giving you the impression of a slipping clutch, The flywheel is effectively a weight which is fastened to the end of the crankshaft of the engine. The power from the pistons tends to be created in ?pulses? and the weight of the flywheel smoothes out these pulses by providing inertia to the rotating engine. As well as providing a weight the flywheel has a gear around its circumference on which the starter motor operates and is a convenient means of attaching the clutch which provides a variable connection to the transmission.

Modern diesel engines generate high torque and as a result they need extra smoothing out or ?damping?. To help with this process a DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) is fitted. This is effectively two flywheels that transmit the drive through a number of springs which cushion the drive to the transmission.

what you are experiencing is probably the compression of the springs and subsequent release of energy.

if the dealers do it for you they will measure the wear in the dmf and if its outside its tolerance they will change it along with your clutch......independents will change anyway which is the best way if your in there change the lot.....from memory the measurements are .....sachs 4 teeth of movement=new dmf and 7 teeth of movement on l.u.k
