I have front parking sensors. These are switched on by the switch on the centre console. BUT - sometimes when I get back in the car the front sensors are ON and sometimes they are OFF. I'd like them to be on all the time (I know they only work at slow speed). Can anyone help me with this please - it's a mystery to me!

Was this a VW option you had with the car?

I would imagine that it can be programmed with the dealers VAG-COM, its still under warranty take it back. ;)

Please put your car details in your signature Chris, it wll save asking everytime.

Thats ok but I think I would put GT 1.4 TSI (160) first because thats the model and engine, its up to you. I didn't know they do a GT in Shark Blue they don't show one?

So are you going back to the dealers then? ;)

Yes probably need to contact the dealers! Shark Blue/Georgian Blue is the same colour. Thanks

As well as being activated by the switch, they are also activated by putting the car in to reverse. Obviously the main thing you want in these cases is the rear parking sensors, but if you were parallel parking for example, you may go backwards and forwards a few times, and front sensors would obviously be helpful too.

Thus the reason for them sometimes being on when you go back to the car, depends on whether or not you left it in reverse gear when it was parked up. Personally I prefer the system Mercedes use where the front ones just come on anyway as soon as you drop below 5 mph or so, but the VW ones don't work like that. Hope that helps.

Thanks Blackthorn. I'll check to see if reverse does turn it off. I agree re: the Mercedes comment. My other car is an MB and the sensors work really logically - ie you don't need to think about them, they just work! Good old VW - making us think!

The VW fitted ones should not be on by default and why would they? You engage reverse gear to activate them and can then do forward and backward movements with front and back warnings.
If you are in a situation where you want notification for just a forwards movement then you switch them on using the switch in front of the gear lever.
Why does the OP say front parking sensors thus implying he/she doesn't have rear ones as well. The standard option is surely Front and Rear sensors?

I'm still using the old trusty system "park by ear" lol.

Seriously though, I find the Golf easy to park in comparison to a Ford Focus...
all aids are a bonus in my book...it's just that I ain't got any.

I'm not quite sure how an honest request for info from the VW community out there turns into some kind of comment on parking ability, but like most drivers (I imagine) I normally park by eye, but use whatever extra assistance that's available to me to avoid parking by 'touch'. As I've paid extra for the parking sensors (the front ones in addition to the rears) I expect them to be available to me automatically, and not to have to search for a button. So thanks to those on the forum who have been helpful.....
