Hey there just bought my first car, it's a 1997 audi 1.8t. When setting off the exaust rattles abit and have noticed there is rain water collecting in it as well, as there was a slight drip coming from it when idle. When i jacked it up to change the rear tyre lots of rain water came out from around the front of the car.

I know this is not coolent and there is no oil in the water, the car starts and drives fine does not overheat and the on dash display says its returning 35mpg at an average of 34mph.

It's due a major service in the handbook but upto 134'000 its been serviced by audi (its on 160'000) and then sericied again by a specialist called volksworld, there is an advisory on the mot cert sayin minor leaking of exaust gases.

Any help would be greatly appricated.

Thanks.

check the drain holes under the battery are not blocked, if they are you will have water sitting around the battery.

Yeah i have read about this in other threads so will have alook tommorow, how would the water make its way into the exaust? also it sounds like the fan belt is noisy, is this normal? i remeber my mums old mk2 polo used to have quite a noisy fan belt, it looks like one of the pulleys is either buckled or not tight enough. The fan belt has just been replaced as there was an old one in the car.

Condensation is what you are seeing coming from your exhaust if you live in a cold climate or it's winter where you are when the exhaust is hot and cold air gets in the cold air condensates inside the rear muffler.

Ok but i'm not sure if it is condensation as theres a constant drip so there must be quite abit in there.

If it isnt, does any one know at which point its most likely to be getting in there?

ok so pulled the battery and cleared the hole under the battery as this was blocked and there was a puddle. just need to re secure the the exhaust as it still making abit of noise well setting off.
