Hi Guys & Girls,
My 99 GTi (non turbo) Golf clutch pedal has just hit the deck and only comes back up if you lift it up!! Woop Woop!!
Anyone had any previous experiences with this problem and any suggestions for fixing it??
Cheers

Very common problem, normally a broken pedal reaction point but also could be the master cylinder or in rare cases (on the 5 speed) the slave cylinder. Did you find a small square piece of metal on the floor?

I think that is missing yes, but it might have come of ages ago because it isnt there now. The white plastic clip that locks the pedal to the ball joint has come out. I have managed to jam the white clip back on the ball joint but not on to the pedal and still the pedal doesnt come back up.

You need a new pedal, white plastic clip, clutch switch contact pad and possibly also a new clutch switch.

Thank you for your help with this.
The little white clip hasn't been on the pedal for a long time, I have spoken to a few people and they think the slave cylinder might have broken. I have researched it a little (in my haynes manual) and apparently VW don't make a replacement, do you know if anyone make a pattern part?

Of course VW make a replacement, I keep all three parts on the shelf! The parts (for right hand drive) are
Pedal 1J2 721 319 C about £20
Clip 1H0 721 357 about £1
Switch contact pad 1J2 721 332 A about £2
The master cylinder (if you need it) is part number 1J2 721 388 A. These are about £70 from VW but are available elsewhere. Normally it is the pedal that fails but sometimes when the pedal hits the floor it bends the master cylinder push rod.
