View Full Version : Front Tyre life

I have a 2007 A6, 2.0 tdi and the last 2 sets of front tyres have both lasted about 10k miles. The first set were Dunlop SP Sports and the second set were Continental Sport Contact2, both fitted by an Audi dealership. I have questioned this with the dealership and they say that A6s are heavy on front tyres! The wear is very even accross both tyres so there are no mechanical problems.

Is 10K a typical lifespan for the current A6 as I was getting twice that on my previous A6? :(

Was your previuos A6 also a 2.0 TDI. It is heavy on the front and the TDI wants to put a lot of torque into the front tyres so your right ffot and tyre wear are very much linked. 10k is very low. Regards Peter

Previous one was 1.9 tdi. I don't think I have a particularly heavy right foot ( but I am biased of course) but my thoughts are that 10K is very low.

Thanks for your reply.

My previous 2.0 TDi had quite an appetite for front tyres, but I found that Michelin Pilot Sports lasted quite a bit longer than the Continentals on my previous car - it may be worth giving these a try?

Cheers!

MF.

I was browsing and came across this, don't know if I am much help but...

I have a C5 2.7T quattro automatic. Been through 2 sets of tyres (all four tend to wear evenly due to the 4 wheel drive).

Part used Michelin Pilots on the car when I bought it and I got 19k miles from them

New set of Avon SS3's went for 26k miles before reaching 2mm of tread.

The 2.7T is pretty heavy and powerful so I would say 10k miles is low.

Ive had Goodyear F1s on the car since I got it and they have seen 8k and they have wore significantly.

Maybe I should qualify by saying 80% motorway, 15% A road and 5% town driving and I am light footed and kind on the brakes.

Well I have to be driving 600 miles a week in a 2.7T!!! It's equivalent to a mortgage in petrol :(

10k seems low.

I have the 2.7TDI version; tyres are Michelin Pilot Primacy. The fronts will need to be changed soon, at about 19k miles. I try to drive with a light foot; on the other hand, most of my driving is short-to-medium distances on country roads, with not much motorway use.

I had Michelin Pilot Sport 255/35/ZR19 (96Y) on from new. Fronts lasted 26k miles, Rears 32k. I drive 2wd Avant Le Mans 2.7tdi

What do you think of the Avon ZZ3? I put 4 on my A6appox 2 months ago and I think they give to much road noise:zx11:

Gents I have just posted a question about this topic

I have cut and pasted it below.... I am concerned as my car is only 6 months old

Hi,
Wonder if anyone can help.
I have the A6 Avant le mans vehicle registered October 2010. I have covered 6100 miles of gentle driving, and now find that I need two front tyres.
The ones on are continental super contac 3 255x35x19.

I have expressed my concern with audi with no joy and were unable to answer if this is isolated or an acceptable wear.
I have contacted Continental and they want my tyres back when I get new ones, and have refused to discuss.

Can anyone advise if they have had similar issues with this model and tyre or is it me.

I think at near £600 to replace like for like its unacceptable or is it me

It must be the Continentals. It's not the car, if you drive as you say. As I posted in this topic here (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=555086&postcount=10) my first Michelins did 26k and now I can report the replacements have still got 5mm on at 45k so it wasn't a fluke.

Could it be tyre pressures? I generally have 42-44 front & back. I know other posts in this forum suggest lower, but I generally have work colleagues in several times a week and cannot be bothered constantly lowering and pumping them up again. And to be honest these higher pressures it don't seem to make any tyre wear difference across width of mine.

They would still be about £600 for a pair so it's not all good news.

6100 miles that's ridiculous. How often does your ABS/Traction control kick in, be honest. I would say you have a trye problem, that's why they want them back. Regards Peter

I drive a 3.0TDI Quattro with 245/40/18 Dunlop Sports as summer tyres and have done 22k miles in them (mainly motorway) and they still have 3mm on average remaining on them. Currently got my Winter Wheels on 245/45/17 Bridgestone Potenza, have done 10k miles on them and there is still 5mm of Tread remaining.

I would be quite concerned if I was getting anything less than 15 - 18k out of a set of tyres!

When discussing with my Service guy at Audi, he said that Quattro's are sore on tyres, especially fronts and he said that realistically you should be getting 11-15k from them.

I'm seeing him on Saturday so I will query about the 6k for you :)

I have a meeting with my local dealer service manager. He has just called me and told me that they will have a look at my car but because I am over the 6000 mile limit by 100 miles they will not do it under warranty!!!
You spend 30K on a car and this is the response!
Also Audi don't warrant tyres.
Will see what they say tomorrw

Just remember that all longditudinally mounted engines like the A6 put a lot of weight over the front axle.

From experience, my front tyres lose 8-9 lbs of pressure every 2 weeks. Therefore, tyre pressure on A6's should be checked every week or so.

By doing that, you shoudl seriously extend the life of the tyres.

6k off a set ? thats mad.

Also, conti's are known for not wearing well, same with pirellis

Are you sure your tyres aren't leaking?? Tyres on my A6 have never lost that much pressure, I think 2 psi after 10k miles... (245/40/18).

Had meeting with the service manager, not very promising reckons that there is also irregular wear on the rear shoulders.
Is going to do a laser a check for me at my cost not under warranty as I have 127 miles over the 6k limit.
Cost £195.

Not impressed.

Also filling out a "dis" report for Audi and will come back to me.

Still waiting for technical rep from continental to call.
Has anyone else noticed the outside shoulders on the rear tyres wearing.

I have two friends who can get through a set of tyres on the driven wheels in 6-7K, so it's not unheard of.

For what it's worth, my 2.0Tdi A6 Avant came with factory 225/50 R17 Conti Sport Contact 2s. The first set on the front lasted 21K (which I didn't think was very good). The rear tyres are still the originals with about 4.5mm left, mileage is now 33K, so they should do about 45K.

You jinxed me. The front left and the rear right are full of nails. Coupled with a ripped sidewall on the rear left (argument with kerb, kerb won!), means I need new boots.

Finally, a chance to upgrade to 19"'s (coming tomorrow)!

Got the 19 ons yesterday. They are s5 reps and they certainly lift the car.

3 of the 4 tyres had nails in them, which would explain the slowly deflating tyres.

Will post pictures of the rims soon

Do you mean appearance or ride height "they certainly lift the car."
Have you informed the insurance company of the change. Regards Peter

I have a 3.0 TDI Quattro avant with Pirelli P Zero's. What sort of mileage should I expect, currently 12K and getting close to the markers.
Presumably all 4 will need replacing, what is the opinion as to the best replacement tyres?
Many thanks

Josh,
The options list on the ID Label in the spare wheel bay details what the car was first delivered with. It would appear you have changed the spec of the car thus it is a material change and the insurance company could get funny about that should it come to light. Regards Peter

I think PeterD was refering to your use of the word reps i.e. not OEM ;)

Now I am confused.

I think the reps vs OEM debate is kinda dead nowadays. who is to say that they are of any less quality?

The amount of 2 year old OEM rims that I saw that were corroded or had been refurbed finally debunked the myth for me.

Also, insurance wise, they made not a jot of difference !

Members are trying to explain to you that if you fit wheels to your car which deviate from the original manufacturer spec, it's classified as an aftermarket modification and as such, should be declared to your insurance - whether you fitted them or it 'came like that.

It's your perogative not to do so but I would advise you do, more than a handful of people have come unstuck through non decleration of modifications to their insurance.

Appreciate the clarification, but for what it is worth, I don;t think it is wrong.

I have fitted wheels of the same size, offset, width as the standard Audi wheels (albeit 19"). I have also fitted the exact same size tyre, speed rating and load rating as the standard avilable tyres.

Appreciating that they are not "OEM", so what. As I said, they made not one jot of difference to my insurance as funnily enough, I have not increased the performaqnce of the vehicle!

Put it this way, if you fitted OEM 19" wheels to your car, you would be in exactly the same position. Just because they are an Audi part would not mean that they are exempt from the modification rule that everyone states.

Oh and before I get flamed, these are my summer rims, so my lovely OEM 17" will be going on in the winter with suitably rated winter tyres.

Following the re- alignment of my cars rear track and examination of tyres by Continental I can give you chaps an update if interested.

Tyre company want tyres back but reckon nothing wrong. If when i change them they find a fault they will tell me ( like I was born yesterday). He reckons that 8k is good any more a bonus. Mentioned putting on Avon ZZ series and told me not to bother as good in wet and dry but would get no miles out of them.

Twisted to Audi UK and they are as a gesture of good will going to give me 3 tyres without any admission of liability or fault.

Waiting to get them fitted after easter;)
