Dashboard problems

Can any help me diagnose my golf problem?
The dash on my golf gt tdi has started to only work intermittedly, sometimes the computer screen is not on, other times the whole dash and dials are not working although all the electrics are functioning fine when this happens.

Does anyone know what this could be??

A mechanic sugested it could be the stereo thats in it is not earth properly which is causing the fault...

I would imagine it's something more then just a stereo? Surely a good test would be to pull the head unit out, and unplug it? Unless it's one of the VW's OEM branded stereo's in which i may think twice? as i don't know how these react when you unplug, and go to plug them back in? Since you need the car with the radio code on it? :s

However if it is not an OEM branded stereo, then simply pulling it out and unplugging it would be a quick and easy test?

Failing that, it looks like you'll have to find someone who can scan the car with VAG-Com.
