I'm guessing is got 100k plus miles on it.
Check cambelt done every 60k.
Check correct oil has been used (pd type 505.01 or higher VW spec)
Open oil filler cap, get a mag torch and check for scoring on the cams (can't always see the cam, depends on what position it stopped in.)
Suspension bangs and squeeks.
Driver door electrics (door wires snap and stop windows and central locking)
CD changers stop loading CD's in synphony head units.
Front wheel bearings start making noise when warmed up.
Turn the steering full lock, alternator pulleys seize and make a right racket.

On the test drive, get to about 60mph in 6th gear (or around 2k rpm) and floor it. This is where the the peak torque is and in a tall gear, if the clutch is weak, this is when it will slip.
If it does slip, budget around £700 for new clutch and DMF or walk away.

My clutch went about 2yrs after buying my avant. Cost me £650 to replace. Not nice!!!
If the bite is on the high side get some money knocked off ;)

make sure you check the air con as well.
makes sure that works, best case scenario is about £50 on a new sensor
worst case is a few hundred quid on a compressor.
Check the plenum chamber where the battery and the servo are.
Check the condition of battery and also look around the chamber to see if you can see or tell if there has been water sitting there for any period of time.
you may see dried water level mark, this could spell trouble later down the line as servo's go on these cars quite frequently.
check all interior lights, i know it's a minor thing but it all adds up here and there.
also make sure to check a range of frequencies on the radio both FM and AM
aerial module known to go on these as well and that again is around £150.
make sure you check the dash when you put the key in and start, engine management light should come on and then go off when started.
if it doesn't come on at all someone has possibly removed the light beghind it to cover something.
and if it all possible try and get a scan done see if it throws up any fault codes.

You would believe how people react when you say you want to do a scan with VAGCOM.
They s**t themselves! Black magic and all that. It'll kill my ECU!!!
