Does anyone know the correct battery for an A6 Avant 2.5TDI CVT? Other than Unipart 110 from Kwik Fit, nothing else seems to fit and I cannot believe Unipart was original equipment.

Have you tried euro car parts' website. You can type your reg number in and it'll tell you which ones fit.
I expect it'll be quicker and cheaper than quick fit too.
Be careful with that big rubber cable thing in front of the battery when you take it out. It has "Do not bend" written on the bulkhead side of it - helpful that!

I got a VARTA battery from these guys http://www.sybsgroup.co.uk/
There round the corner from my work but they do mail order too.

Thanks, I eventually discovered Varta was the answer and got one from a dealer off their website. Amazing that Halfords and several internet sites wanted to sell the wrong sized battery for the car!

I have only ever found the correct size at the Audi dealer and that is after extensive searches

I'm having the same issues!? I have an Audi A6 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001JBD6XC/) 2002 V6 2.5TDI. The current battery which is dead as a doornail when I tried to start it at 05:00 this morning is a Varta 12V 720A 82Ah dimmensions:
Length: 278 mm
Width: 175 mm
Height: 190 mm
Every single website I go to reccomends a much bigger battery that won't fit in the tray.
Most of the ones that fit my current tray dimmensions are well below the current CCA and Ah http://www.avforums.com/forums/images/smilies/facepalm.gif
Even the AA, RAC, kwikfit and halfords (http://www.halfords.com/) recommend the big battery but I have checked and there is no way in hell it will fit....
Dimensions (LxWxH): 353 x 175 x 190 mm

Are you sure it won't fit in the tray? You need to remove the plastic plenum chamber cover, and carefully remove the large rubber pipe/cable cover which goes along the bulkhead in front of the battery. There's then enough room to get the correct battery in/out.
For detailed instructions with pictures, have a look at the site that used to be called weidlittlebiscuit but has moved to http://www.veedoubleu.com/?page_id=4
Whie you've got the battery out, make sure you clean the plenum chamber drains.
Since I'm feeling nice today, and if it's not raining, I'll go and measure mine at lunch time.

Well, I was curious (and it's not raining), so I measured mine for you. Mine is a halfords HCB096, which i measured at 278 x 175 x 190. (My car is a 2.4 petrol). There's seems to be space to fit the longer one, but it would need a different tray.
Looking at eurocarparts, they size your car details with a 278mm long battery (680cca).
You could try asking your local Audi parts department what size they say it should be. It might be that the larger battery was only for arctic countries and the tray is different.

You can actually fit the larger battery, the HB110 from Halfords was originally fitted to my Allroad (and I assumed from the forums this battery to be incorrectly specified), the previous owner had disgarded the original battery bracket, and the battery was flopping around on the tray....
Now I know why..... The Varta battery (standard fitment), mentioned in this post which is the smaller battery fits but using a small bracket bolted to the bottom of the tray.
The larger battery uses a much bigger bracket which bolts to the top of the bulkhead ie. directly behind the engine, near the servo. This is described as the heavy duty battery in ETKA.
Hence when I purchased the new heavy duty bracket it was the wrong one for my new Varta battery. I ended up making my own braket in the end, but I still have the heavy duty bracket for when this new battery fails!
So, basically both batteries are correct, don't waste your money changing batteries as I did, just make sure you have the correct bracket and bolt the battery down......

bit of a swerve- but- get a 'plug-in to cig lighter' 'memory saver' (lots on ebay)-- It keeps radio codes etc when you take battery off.

I use a 40AH jump pack with a cig to cig lighter cable, it allows us to do a fair bit with the battery off except start the car.

I use the socket in the boot of my Octy to recharge my battery pack so that I can put it in the tent and keep the cool box running to make sure I am not drinking warm beer whilst camping, warm larger is offensive...
