top bargain this year has to be the white coupé I bought on eBay. no viewing, paid £185 cash for it, drove it back from Holyhead to Manchester on £15 of fuel and the engine, box, certain panels and it's entire interior are still being used now.

Zol - you found a stereo in the bin? does it work? who put it there in the first place??

zollaf

aye, a clarion out of a nissan navara. never did find out why it was in the bin (nissan main dealer), but it was, so she asked if she could have it, and the boss said yes. that was 5 years ago, and its still going strong. best thing was when they had a new oil tank installed. said i could have what was left in the old one, thought about 50 litres. i ended up with 250 litres of main dealer oil, and everyone else there had some as well. good example of waste, they were just going to stick it in the waste oil tank.

some got sold, but most of it went into my own and friends cars at the time. my landrover had a lot of oil changes that year.

New Mk5 GTI DSG for £16k (specced at £24K) 18 months ago. Too powerful for me though. Wheel spin. Engine torque. Tyre smoke. Thinking of having it de-tuned for the wife. Nice reliable little car though.

Had a couple of good bargains, mainly 4 x 4's in about 1992 i bought a Landrover for £85 without an engine. spent about £350 putting a 3.9V8 in it along with new diffs and coil springs all round. ran it for 3 years used it daily for towing heavy boats to and from the lakes. sold it for £2500 cash.

my current range rover is the next best bargain £200 again no engine, this time i went for the Mercedes sprinter diesel for this total spend including recon power steering £700. have been offered £3500 for it. but i need it for work so i shall keep it for the rest of the year at least.

All my birthdays and chrismas have come at once

Sadly a friend of the wifes husband died unexpectedly, We have been doing what we could to help, At the weekend I was asked to empty the garage / workshop. I couldnt believe my eyes to see a new ( still wrapped in its delivery packaging!) huge Snap-on tool chest ( metric set D if that means anything!), tool box, puller set etc and all the tools and air tools etc, When i told Lyn that this was very expensive gear she was'nt interested and just kept insisting that I take the lot and would'nt take anything for it , she's just happy its going to a good home. So for the price of a hire van to get it home, I got three trolly, three bottle jacks. a 15 ton press. Air compressor, Axle stands, transmission jack, several socket sets and the Snap-on gear all in immaculate condition.
I bought a lottery ticket on the way home!

IMHO snap on make the best qaulity tools around, ive been buying snap on and other makes for the last 17 yrs and TBH ive still got a 3/8 snap on rachet i bought on my first day as a trainee on the 8 aug 1993 (omg i feel old now lol) anyway, the box i bought was a 53in limited edition aston box, i had a standard red 40 in snap on box before but had ran out of space, not many people outside of the motor trade will agree but i think my box was worth £3100 plus VAT (i did get £1800 trade in on my old box) snap on boxes hold there money and are of a high standard compared to say a mac box which just looks cheap IMHO

now I'm actually getting my hands (properly) grubby, I've come to appreciate how a good quality tool can make the job a shedload easier.

I've started to buy tools, as opposed to borrowing them for jobs. The only downside to this being that jobs often end up costing a small fortune :Blush2:

As for toolboxes - I'm still on ********* professional boxes :(

nowt wrong with halfords tools, they are made by draper after all, and have a good guarantee. snap on are the best, but very expensive. indeed, to buy a big toolbox and fill it up could cost £40k.

I needed 2 new tyres for my A6 ....225X50XR17 and only usually go for either Pirelli / Continentals or Bridgestones. Either way at the best prices around you 're looking at anywhere between £280 - £340 depending on the prices you get.
I got a Brand NEW set of 17" Trapezoid TT alloys c/w with AL new rubber, Continentals Sport ContactII balanced and good to go delivered to my door for £435.:approve:
New from Audi the wheels are around £400 each + the rubber = around £2200+
A great deal in my book:beerchug:

The absolute kicker was....I took my old 8 twin spoke alloys off and sold them with the tyres for £210:D

Further to this manly tool discussion - I need some help.

Having used a (rather snazzy) snap on portable impact gun over the last week for various driveway jobs, I've come to realise how much easier jobs are with such a tool. (I'm used to elbow grease and hand tools).

I can't afford a decent portable impact gun, so I'm going down the DIY Air tools route.

Any recommendations on cheapbutdecent brands or the basic tools I should be going for. Impact sockets seem to cost the earth, but I presume this is because of their durability?

zollaf
06-09-2010, 09:24 AM
nothing will touch a snapon battery impact gun. i have the sealey one, and its very poor in comparisson. regards air guns, the cheapo sip branded ones, circa £30 are ok. they will undo most things with ease, but dont forget the oil. if you dont have an inline oiler, just pour a few drops in the tools inlet port each day. again , you get what you pay. i use an ingersoll rand 1/2 inch gun that will undo anything, literally, but these cost around £400. (worth every penny though). personally, i would look on ebay, or ask your local snap on dealer if he has any used guns for sale, as a quality used item will be much better than a cheap one. mind you, even the cheapest one is better than not having one. expensive ones are quiter and more controllable. mine will quite happily loosen and tighten little m6 bolts, as well as big crank bolts or hub nuts. a cheap one will struggle sometimes on really tight bolts that mat require a traditional scaffold tube to crack them off.
black impact sockets are different because they wont shatter like normal shiny sockets. you will never see a mechanic use a shiny socket in a gun :D. i have used plenty and never broken one.

Eshrules
06-09-2010, 10:17 AM
I thought the same to myself when I saw a generic copy of the snap on on eBay for ~ £60. You just know those batteries will last 12 months and then give up.

For what an inline oiler costs, I think I'd be stupid not to get one, saves having to manually oil each tool!

And it's funny you should mention SIP, I'm currently watching a few snap-on guns on eBay, but I've found a starter kit which seems to be ideal for the use it'd get with me

i bought a snap on 1/2 batt nut gun 18 months ago i use it all the time (i havent used my mac airgun since i got the batt gun) i have to charge the battery maybe once a week and tbh its the best tool ive bought for a long time, it has only let me down once and that was on a lorry, it will always undo driveshaft nuts with ease, at the moment im toying with the idea of buying one of the new li-on batterys for it but they cost £189 each plus vat, ive used sealy and mac batt guns and tbh they are crap not worth a can of cold ****, thing is i use mine day in day out if your only using it from time to time then a sealy one could last you maybe a year tops, everyday and i rekon you would bin it within a month

Following on with the tool discussion - Halfords have currently got a big sale on - I always tend to pick some tools up when they do this on certain parts of their range. Last bargain was a set of Pro flexi head spanners for £30/40.

This round's bargain is the 120 piece socket set
