It could be a few things mate, It could mean that you are burning antifreeze. have you noticed if the water level in the header tank has gone down? Sometimes when the head gasket goes it will produce a passage for the antifreeze to pass from the capillaries into the combustion chamber. Have a look at the colour of the oil to see if it is a bit brown, if so water and oil are mixing. The other things it could be your valve guides worn and oil in getting into the cylinder.
Hope this is of help

I have checked my oil, and it appears to be fine, also it doesnt seem low on water. Should i book it in to get compression tested

Yean that would be the next step, a mate of mine had the same golf and his smoked, they did a compression test and is was ok, what we ended up doing was changing the oil and oil filter and adding a liquid which hardens the piston rings, which worked just fine. stopped it smokeing.
The additive that we used was from comma called petrol low smoke. One other thing that it could be it the engine's valve seals may be worn.
