Good Afternoon All,

Its been a while since I have been here, but still enjoying my A4 that I have had for over 3 years now, if anyone asks my review is still "the best car I have ever owned!!"

A couple of things need sorting though. Firstly the front brake pads are knackered. I have a level of mechanical knowledge, but wondered if anyone had a step by step guide so I don't miss anything and crash in to a tree!

Secondly, the power steering makes a hell of a squeak when turning at low revs (maneuvering etc) and the power steering feels sluggish and unwilling to turn.

The guy that services the car took the front apart and changed all the belts etc but didn't solve the problem, for a very temporary repair, I spray WD40 down the belts as they spin at idle and that stops it for a very short space of time.

Alternator, cooling, AC all not effected, just the PAS.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

Get a Haynes manual for changing the pads its a ten minute job ( if your wheels come off easy).

Get your serpentine belt changed and tensioner before it fails. Wont do much harm but a pain if your away from home...

Not taking the pi-- but if you think spraying wd40 on you belts is appropriate action you should not even contemplate touching your brakes

Agree with ritchie - the squeaking will be the alternator pulley - common on all the PD engines.

Can't say about brakes - I'm too scared of not stopping, so always goes to the garage for that!

agreed, years ago and i do mean years ago you could get belt dressing which was fine and got rid of noise but the tension that belts are under now its no good any more, the last thing in the world to get on a belt is oil of any sort IMHO remember that the smooth back of the belt runs some pulleys so getting oil on it wont help
