View Full Version : Smokey TDI 2.0 (140)

Hi all,
just wondered if a smokey 2.0 TDI (140) is a common thing.
Every time I put my foot down (Which I tend not to do often I must admit) I'm getting a cloud of smoke behind.
Motors done about 65K.
Is there an additive or something that can help with this or?
Any feedback on this greatly appreciated as always.

What colour is the smoke? White or dark?

The Wifes 2.0 TDI estate does the same - was following it yesterday and every time she accelerated it left out a small puff of light-ish grey smoke - not sure if this is good bad or normal - car's only done 36k miles.. Any thoughts appreciated.. If you give it a bootful you can sometimes get a real cloud behind you too..
As a matter of interest I had a quick glance at the air-filter and it's filthy - obviously never been changed - wonder if that's part of the problem with some sort of air restriction from the filter? Have also heard that a blockage in the fuel filter can give smoke issues but I'm no expert!
What sort of fuel ecomomy are you getting? Our's seems to struggle to show much more than 41mpg on the long average reading..

Most if not all diesels are a tad smokey under hard acceleration.

Quite normal for a PD, nothing to worry about. My 2005 Sport did it from new, it didn't get any worse or better over the 146k I covered in it.
I always thought that for a modern diesel it shouldn't really do it, but that just seems to be the way the PD is.

I have 2.0 tdi sport 80,000 miles had it a year and a half its smoked the same fir me, hard acceleration puff of smoke that then clears, found it to be worse when i use fuel from morrisons, another thread on here suggested using shell and there has been quite an improvement since.
I put the good stuff in from shell (V+) or whatever its called every 4 or 5 tank fulls its a bit dearer but the car seems to run better.

Urban buildup, and when you hoofit the pressure clears the soot in the exhaust, it ain't what you'd expect from a modern car, but it is a regular feature of cars not fitted with DPF's, only the PD seems worse than others.
A fuel filter problem, can cause issues though, like sluggy performance, I'm going to change mine this week, I'll try to do pictures of it.

Not sure about the urban build up (although I know what you mean) as I did very little urban driving, but on a daily basis often drove 150 to 200+ miles to customers. I'd get off the motorway, down the slip road, then quick get away onto the roundabout and it still smoked excessively, quite embarrassingly at times for a modern car.
Turbo Diesel always give an initial puff of smoke, it’s the Turbo spooling up to the correct speed. The accelerator pedal is at a position to fuel for the load/desired demand and it's the slight "lag" .. Electronics have helped this matter over the years, but there is still a slight over fuelling issue that is not detrimental to the car ... it's not a problem its a characteristic

There's nothing 'slight' about it. Quite enough smoke to sometimes make you wonder what's gone wrong. Some earlier PD's smoke far more than they should, especially given the technology available to VW. Earlier 1.9 100/130's didn't suffer from this (not to anywhere near this extent anyway), why should the newer variant be so different.
Newer would appear to be not always better. The CR is now what the PD should have been all along.

iirc, the 140 and 170 PD engines were rushed out to stay up in the bhp stakes.

Did mine today and the smoke seems reduced, performance is smoother, hopefully the misfire will be gone from now on, and basically the old one looked like a hoover filter on a bad day.
Easy to change, just undo the bolts on the canister, pull old filter out slowly and ditch it in an old litre coke bottle with the top cut off, renew the rubber seal in the lid, put new filter in and push lid onto it, do the screws back up, and fire it up.

Yes I sure did :approve:. Also using the Millers will help along with the shell fuel save and v power once a month.

Euro5 diesels shouldn't give any visible smoke, Euro5 came in Sept 2009 for new car approval and it will be illegal to sell Euro4 new cars from 1st Jan 2011. I think most Vag diesels have been Euro5 for most of this year.
Doesn't help the thread starter though. :Blush2:
