Hello have had my 2000 a6 avant for 6 weeks or so, its a 5speed auto and when I select Drive it can be fine no noise and then sometimes it clunks similiar to not having your foot on the brake. And also when going over 40 it will change into 5th and there is almighty crashing feeling BUT only occasionally, will not do this on demand.

Have a best friend who has plugged it into a 3k diagnostic device and it has an electrical wiring error or something which stopped him changing the oil as it seemed a waste of time (£85 for the 9litres needed!!)

So my question is has anyone else had this and cured it, as my friend said he could go through the whole wiring on the car and eventually find it but this will take days, weeks or months ?????

Be vary wary buying a bloody audi auto from anywhere unless it has a warranty that covers EVERTHING !

If you can have it rescanned, and tell us the fault code, there's some very knowledgeable people here who may be able to tell you whether it's a "sensor X - £35" or a "You need a new gearbox - £1200"

9 litres of oil for a 1.8T? That seems like a lot! My 2.4 only takes 5.

Do not know the fault code but I was told it was a communication error between the ecu, the gearbox and the air flow meter. (think that was it)

Will try to sell the car for spares (as is original paintwork and has leather)or a cheap runaround as it may just stay like this and never get worse ??

There is alot worse on ebay ...

sounds like a speed signal fault.
does the display on the dash have the gears all lit up black in a red bar ?

if so the gearbox is in fault mode. should be red on black background.

The gear selector is in red.

Poor old gal just sits there looking for herself, probably have the brakes stuck on by now more expense ..

Thanks for all replies

had this on mine, turned out to be ABS unit had died, this locked the speed signal to the dash, which then sends it on the autobox.
without the speed signal the auto box went into limp mode - gear selector on dash red with gears in black.
gearbox then crashed the gears as it was trying to change gear without all the sensor info.

got ABS rmodule refurbished by BBA reman, and now runs like a dream, only cost £100 or so.

you need to get fault codes read, if you can't read a module such as the ABS then that can be the issue.
to test remove fuse to ABS, reset box and see how it drives.
