Hi there,
I have a 1999 A6 Avant 4.2 Quattro. It has just developed what feels like a misfire - idle is "lumpy" and under load - particularly accelerating on the motorway when the auto box is in 5th I get a juddering which feels like the misfire - I'm pretty sure it's there throughout the rev range and not just at idle.
I recently had the car serviced and the garage said they fitted new plugs (so far I've taken them at their word on this but it may be time to check!) but this has had no effect on the misfire.
I bought a diagnostic cable from ebay and downloaded VCDS lite - I can read out the fault codes ok but it reports "no fault codes found" for the engine - in fact there are hardly and fault codes except a couple of things relating to the alarm that need attention. I got the garage that serviced it to read out the fault codes in case I was doing something wrong but they confirmed no fault codes stored.
I've searched round the internet and it seems I'm not alone in having a misfire - however all the other forums I've read where people have a misfire have fault codes which state "random misfire" or point to a misfire on specific cylinder(s).
So I need some advice - what should I check next? Naturally I'd better double check the plugs but if they are ok where do I go next? I don't have any warning lights on and without any fault codes I'm not sure where to look next.
