Hi, I have a few week old A4 3.2 Avant S-Line - Occasionally when reverse is selected the car will over rev (as high as 4K rpm) before beginning to move, which is very disconcerting.
If it were a manual I would suggest that the clutch is slipping (badly). I have searched the forum and the net in general and cannot find any thing similar on such a new car.
Audi have had the car back once to investigate the issue but could not replicate the problem (undoubtedly they did not test long enough). The issue is actually very worrying as we are fearful that the full power of the engine could kick in at any time which could be very dangerous when parking etc so any comments or advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks.

Hi and Welcome,
I have 2.0TDI with Multi and yes the nature of the box is for engine speed to increase and then the drive plays catch up.
My drive is quite steep and when reversing up it I do experience the same although not 4k rpm.
Yours does seem strange though

Hi Pitch, thanks for your reply. I have driven several other multitronic's (09/10 plates recently) and this does not seem what I consider to be normal, it is also not consistent which leads me to believe there is some kind of fault.
ie I can be on our near flat driveway and reverse quite normally (no over revving), other times I can be doing the exact same thing, but the car will not start to move until it is revving very high, which is when it is worrying just in case it suddenly bites. Audi is taking it back for a few days to do some extended testing, but any further thoughts from anyone would be appreciated.
Many thanks.

Thanks for the reply - Audi have the car still and we have told them we don't want it back until they fix it - they have tried to fob us off with "it is characteristic of that model", but if it was characteristic it would do it all the time - We have told them to demonstrate it by giving us another car with similar spec to see if it does have the same issue. Time will tell, if not we will return the car I expect and audi will lose our companies future business. Shame as it a nice car other than this issue.

I would definatly call there bluff and ask for a courtesy car with the tip gearbox, they gave me a s3 tip and it had no problem, i still rekon theres something strange though as thry were adamant nothing wrong although mine came back fixed, please keep in touch with me on this one for any future probs!

I dont know if you have sorted this but I spoke to a good friend (who is also a master tech at VW), who confirmed that this was also a problem with the similar gearbox on the passat which required a software update. Mine is back with audit in two weeks after being told previously there is no problem.
Did they fix yours in the end?
