Our 1.9 TDI (140 000 km) started to rattle when idling, and clutch pedal was pulsing when depressed a bit. When our mechanic pulled the clutch down, 2 fingers on the pressure plate were broken, and the flywheel damaged by loose bits of metal. New clutch kit and flywheel cost Aus$2100 to install. We treat the car with care, don't ride the clutch, and travel mostly on good country roads. Anyone else had this problem or can suggest a reason apart from just bad luck?

They are very prone to failure on the 105PS model whether the original was Sachs or LUK but more so Sachs I find, either can be fitted from the factory. The price is about right if genuine VW parts have been used, you can get the parts here from Sachs or LUK a lot cheaper than genuine, literally half the price.

It became a victim of rising wages.
